I suppose Francis Drake as he is far back on my family tree, his brother is a very distant grandfather of mine and my great grandma's name was Sarah Drake.

I'm disgusted that François L'Ollonais was left out. The man was pwnage/psychosis personified.

One time, he was in Central America, and he had two Spanish prisoners with him. He asked one of them to tell him to provide a safe route past the Spanish garrison in the area. The prisoner tried to be tricky and led L'Ollonais and his pirates straight into a trap. Barely escaping with his life, L'Ollonais took both the Spaniards aside afterwards. He drew his rapier, slashed open the chest of tricky Spaniard, ripped the heart out and tore it in half with his teeth.

He then politely requested that the remaining Spaniard provide a safer route. :D

And do you know what the ironic part is? He was eaten by cannibals in the end

But of the choices provided, I picked Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts. He was a suave character, wore the latest fashions, and preferred rum to tea. Oh, and he was almost certainly the most successful pirate in history.

Drake, though technically for most of his 'pirate' career he was actually working on behalf of the Royal Navy against England's enemies (notably the Spanish).

Anyone cool enough to get a tribe named for him on Survivor must be cool!

Then who was the Morgan tribe name after? :p

Jean Lafitte. I know the most about him, and have visited the New Orleans battlefield(where he assisted Andrew Jackson against the British in the War of 1812), the swamps of Barataria(where he hid and it's rumored where some of his treasure still lies), and his blacksmith shop in the French Quarter(okay I've never been in there since it's a bar and I'm one of the few who go to N.O. not to drink  ) . Plus I had a book about him I read all the time when I was a kid. Yo ho!

It was tough to pick between Jean, Blackbeard, and Drake, but in the end I chose Drake.

Upping for the approach of pirate day. :D I think I'll have to go with Blackbeard just because he was so renowned. However there are many of them that receive honorable mention in my book. ;)

Henry Morgan. He inspired the pirate logo for Captain Morgans Spiced Rum, he inspired Long John Silver from Treasure Island, and he also inspired Captain Hook from Peter Pan.

He was one of the first sucessful and feared pirates, sure he made a lot of dumb moves (such as losing no less than 3 of his own flagships, 1 by running it into a reef, and another by allowing his crew to get drunk and blow up the ship by accident) but he still kicked butt.

I'm a bit surprised that Anne Bonny didn't make the poll, but oh well.

I would have to say Bluebeard. When I went to St. Thomas I learned a great deal of his history at Bluebeard's Castle, and he was a pretty crafty early version of a mobster.
