There's about a dozen names I prefer to any of the nine listed. But tops is probably Kurosawa.

Spielberg, but Peter Jackson comes in a close second.

    Tim Burton.
The only issue I can really take with him is that he casts the same two people in every single blasted thing that he does...

I love many directors, but my favorite would be Peter Jackson. I also like Lucas, Spielberg, coppola, Scott, Coen brothers, Wachowski brothers, Kurosawa, Kubrick, and many others.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I adore everything Mel Brooks has touched.

Ridley Scott is by far my favorite film director. He has so many movies that I love, even though some of them are flawed. Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma & Louise, American Gangster, Matchstick Men, the list goes on and on. And as far as I'm concered, Kingdom of Heaven (DC), Alien, and especially Blade Runner are as close to perfect as movies get. I also love how varried all of his work is. He doesn't stay with one type of movie. Science fiction, historical epics, war films, even comedies. Its something for everyone, and his films are always so beautifully composed. Spielberg, Scorsese, Lucas, Cameron, Kubrick and Coppola are all amazing as well.
