I've always loved d'Artagnan the best, but I'm now re-reading the books in the original French and I must say Athos has started growing on me. He's a very interesting character and I love him being mysterious and very, very noble. :)

I remember reading the book for the first time years ago and liking it. It holds up pretty well despite the years.

Never read the book(s), but I've seen some of the movie versions (the 50s one with Gene Kelly, the 90s with Kiefer Sutherland et al. plus The Man in the Iron Mask with Leo which had the musketeers as well) so I voted d'Artagnan

The Man in the Iron Mask with Leo is very, very, very loosely based on "Le Vicomte de Bragelonne", which is basically "The Three Musketeers after 30 years" and focuses mostly on Athos' son Raoul. I have it on VHS and tried to re-watch it recently, but I couldn't. It was so blatantly Hollywoodly dumbed down, I managed to get only through the first 10 minutes or so. :p It killed me how everyone was calling everyone else by their first names - which, in case of Athos, Porthos and Aramis, aren't even their real names, just nicknames from youth - instead of their proper titles. The king's advisor's introduction of Aramis as "the priest Aramis" was ridiculous - it should be "abbé d'Herblay". Or Athos - it's "the count de La Fère", dammit, show the man some respect!

And don't let me get started on the whole "Louis is d'Artagnan's son" nonsense. The closest d'Artagnan got to Anne of Austria was in the original Three Musketeers when he was allowed to kiss her hand. And as to Porthos owning a brothel - it was actually Aramis who was the biggest womanizer of the four. By that time Porthos was a respectable widower. :p
