Who played Obi-Wan best?

They did an equally good job

I think they both added the the char as a whole. Ewan showed us a young and vibrant jedi with all charecteristics that embodied a jedi and Alec showed us the wise old sage.

Ewan was no slouch either though.

As far as I'm concerned, growing up with Star Wars, I will probably always see Alec Guiness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, as I'm sure a few of the over-25's in this group would probably think, however, Ewan McGregor has done an EXCELLENT job playing Obi-Wan Kenobi. The mannerisms, the neuances, everything was done down to a T. The character of Obi-Wan in the OT was a wise old sage, which, I don't think that the PT version brought over to the same degree - but that is no fault of Ewan at all. The thing that Ewan did was to bring depth to the character, which in my opinion was probably a little too straight-laced, and wasn't given enough room for subtle humour, but again, that wasn't Ewan's fault, that was down to Lucas.

Although, in a question like this, is it going to be a fair answer given? Considering all of the fangirls that love Ewan because he's a "hottie", do they look at it in terms of acting quality, or just because of his looks?

I'm no Alec basher, but in the OT, he didn't really do
much as Obi-wan the charactor. With the exception of ANH,
he was just a "shadowy blue guy".

Ewan did alot more for the charactor of Obi-wan, and when
I hear that name I always picture Ewan.

For me, Sir Alec is "old ben Kenobi"
and Ewan is "Obi-wan"

I don't think this question is really framed correctly. Alec Guinness didn't really play Obi-Wan in the sense that Ewan McGregor did. Alec Guinness created Obi-Wan with his performance and did an excellent, excellent job. Ewan McGregor was charged with the task of playing Obi-Wan. I am hard pressed to imagine the job of really playing the established character going any better.

I ended up voting both, because I think both outstanding performances together create a remarkably unified character who *also* grows and changes through experience. It's the best thing about the Star Wars films, for me.

I agree that they did an equally good job, and agree with Solojones. Alec created the character, Ewan just stepped into his shoes. Both did a fantastic job to create the character that we love.
