Who Should Have Done Vader's Voice?

Christopher Lee or James Earl Jones?

I've heard Lee speak during his roles as Dracula, very deep and powerful voice. I think it sounded more evil than Jones' voice. Also, not be picky but Jones' voice sounded too black. Vader is clearly a disfigured white man.

 

Vader is the blackest brotha in the galaxy, a Nubian guy.

 

I don't think Lucas could have afforded Christopher Lee!
(Although he might have come along for the ride for cheap, to join his pal Peter Cushing.)

Remember that JEJ was picked for Vader for ANH, when there was no sign of a multimillion-dollar grossing SAGA ahead! JEJ was practically an unknown at the time.


ANYWAY
I really like Christopher Lee's voice and I think he would have been interesting, but he sounds too "human". James Earl Jone does a better job of just being a disembodied, nearly monotone, robotic voice, whereas Lee's voice is richer, has a stronger timbre (is that the word?). Very cool, yes, but not suited for someone "more machine than man".
Still woulda been good though.

I never viewed Vader´s voice as black. I know JEJ is black, but still, when I hear Vader´s voice, it´s Vader´s voice.

Two reasons: 1. He doesn't make Vader seem like a black man. He just seems like...Vader. 2. We wouldn't have Lee to play Dooku if he had voiced Vader.

But, in a related subject, John Rhys-Davies plays Gimli and is the voice of Treebeard in TTT. Lee could have still played Dooku without much problem.

I think James Earl Jones was definitely the best choice for Vader's voice.

 

Jones was the best choice, the voice is so deep, it's almost scary even without the armor.

 

What's with all this talk of Jones sounding "black" and not sounding black? Is the voice somehow worse if it sounds black? I guess I must be missing the point. care to explain, someone?

Just kiddin' (of course) Though Christopher Lee has an amazing voice for a villain, I just can't even imagine anyone else doing it other than the great JEJ.

 

Well I agree that Christopher Lee has a great deep voice, James Earl Jones has a VERY unique and distinguished voice. I'm definitely glad we had the privilege of him being Darth Vaders voice.

 

I think James Earl Jones's voice is the perfect voice for Lord Vader.

Lee's voice would probably sound a bit too British. Also, I think JEJ's voice has a certain edge to it. It just sounds a little bit ehm, sharper than Lee's.

 

Heck even when JEJ isn't trying to do the Vader voice, his voice sounds like hes doing it anyways lol.

I remember hearing him talk on the radio at a baseballl game.... he wasn't even trying to do the DV voice... and he did it. No electric tampering, he just flat out did it.


JEJ is my choice for the voice of the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader.

 

Jabba-wocky: There´s nothing wrong with a black voice, but someone claimed that Vader sounds black and that it doesn´t fit, because Anakin´s white.
I disagree. Vader´s voice is Vader´s voice. It doesn´t sound either black, white, yellow or green; It sounds Vader. He´s a machine and JEJ did a fantastic job making him sound not-human.

Hmm, I´ll have to think again.... You can hear that Vader´s voice is black if you know it, but I never viewed his voice as black, because I first heard the voice as Vader´s and Vader has no color, since he is half machine.
