I'm hoping the humor is more in line with what has really worked in the past: married couple banter (Han/Leia, the droids).

I want to see Han and Jar Jar together in one scene. And no not with Han shooting him or otherwise harming him in any way. Just a funny scene together. Don't ask me why I just think it would be glorious.

I maintain that what Jar Jar really needed was a good comedic "straight man" to play off of. Someone who fully acknowledges how ridiculous and over the top he is. Han would fill that roll excellently.

But Jar Jar has got to be at least 90 by now, right?

Probably, but we don't know Gungan lifespans, do we? Chewy was 200 in episode 4 and he was still pretty spry. And Yoda was over 800 when he fought Dooku and Sideous. I think Jar Jar returning would work.

    Megads! Whata mesa saying?!?

I have no problem with a little slapstick in my Star Wars. Enduring the reaction of fans who do have a problem with it is much worse though, so for that reason I say leave any Jar Jar / Ewok level antics out of it.

    Humor, yes. Stupid, no.

Probably the most important aspect is that the humor doesn't ruin the general tone of the movie, or serious scenes; it should add to it or relieve the viewers and characters at times. Sometimes quick shifts in tone can work -- especially in experimental fiction that wants to create a jarring feeling -- but sometimes not. Going from the death of a character to a slapstick routine produces an uncomfortable, inappropriate feeling in the viewer (me, at least).

The only way Jar Jar would have been funny/endearing would have been if he were mute.

I hope that there isn't any slapstick (Slapstick is the recurse to humor involving exaggerated physical activity which exceeds the boundaries of common sense. - Wikipedia) as that's really not Star Wars, but I do hope for humor like we've previously seen with R2 and 3PO and Han/Leia banter.

I agree, but the R2-3PO banter has to be better than what we got in the PT. Not a bash here, just an observation. 3PO had some pretty lame lines in the PT.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Corporal Hudson kind of humor, though.

As for the OP, I would say stay with the droids for a comedy slapstick aspect. We need some good Artoo/Threepio stuff. Last time in a big damn movie they did some back and forth was in AOTC in 2002! (they have, like, 3 scenes together in ROTS and it's all fairly heavy)

They actually got the hang of it in The Clone Wars TV series, they did a Mace Windu / Jar-Jar pairing that worked really well. The "straight man" aspect is actually in TPM but it's really, really buried away amongst the bigger aspects. (Bit that works, "You must have Jedi reflexes if you race pods." *Qui-Gon uses Jedi reflexes at that exact moment to grab Jar-Jar's tounge* "Don't do that again.")
