Exactly this. Someone can use any lightsaber. However, it will not 'feel' the same as one they have constructed themselves, from a crystal that chose them. By choosing, I mean a link between the two. By picking it up or looking at it when it's with other crystals, it just feels right. Almost like choosing a pet, except it doesn't sprout legs and walk to you :p

    Fair enough.

I didn't like that arc very much. I actually thought it was fairly boring, paint by numbers.

How would Obi-Wan know whether or not the crystal would chose Luke?

Sounds like someone was watching Harry Potter when writing that arc. :p

Maybe Obi-Wan was guessing? Or the Will of the Force told him.

What's fascinating about this clip is that it says the crystal focuses the Force from the Jedi.

So if a non-Force user can use a saber, I wonder if that means the saber is less effective, less powerful?

Or maybe he didn't, and the lightsaber didn't choose Luke. We've already established that others can use someone else's lightsaber (AotC, TESB) it more likely that it didn't feel right. But also bear in mind that Luke would not have anything to compare it to, so would know no different until RotJ.

    Edit: Damn autocorrect :(

    Exactly.

So it's canon that the Force and technology can work in conjunction. That means someone like the Rakata could power their technology with the darkside, or even the Jedi. Or Sith!

Maybe Luke's crystal conspired with Vader's crystal to cut off Luke's hand. It refused to harm it's real master like the elder wand. Damn, if only Luke knew that he was facing off against his own lightsaber as well as Vader's.

Maybe Anakin's crystal had ambivalent feelings about Vader.

Maybe Vader's crystal felt bad after Bespin and tried to make up for it's actions. The Redemption of Darth Vader's Lightsaber is a story that needs to be told.

You are correct in your assessment of the lightsaber crystals. The crystal chooses the Jedi, and together they share an intimate relationship, such that the lightsaber blade is an extension of the Jedi him- or herself. That's why a Jedi is most at ease with the blade that s/he constructed. If you're ever watched the Clone Wars micro-series, you may have heard of the Crystal Code:

The crystal is the heart of the blade.
The heart is the crystal of the Jedi.
The Jedi is the crystal of the Force.
The Force is the blade of the heart.
    All are intertwined.
The crystal, the blade, the Jedi.
    We are one.

I like this. And it gives us a way of seeing how "lightside" technology might differ from dark or exploitative uses of Force tech. It has everything to do with allowing the Force to express its will instead of forcing one's will on the Force.

Also, concerning the mention of having to choose either light or dark, there being no middle ground - didn't Obi-Wan say that only a Sith deals in absolutes? A morally ambiguous side of the Force is not something implausible at all.

I think I'll doodle up some dark side barbarians.

Dra--- if you've got ideas, now's the time ;)

For example... don't have a scanner, so just took a pic with my phone, but you get the idea...

Hey Logic! Agreeing further, for what it's worth, if memory serves correctly, in the Shatterpoint novel Mace uses his lightsaber's proximity to track the movements of Kar Vastor. There's a bit in this novel as well about the Jedi / Saber relationship.

I get that Vader said Luke constructing his lightsaber was a testament to his knowledge of the Force, since it is important that the mind must be harnessed to the point that allows someone on their own to build things that are that advanced. But making the crystal some sort of mystical element that calls to its seeker takes away the fact that the lightsaber is just a technology that was invented over the years by their users, and it also makes it seem that the Jedi are more about the weapon than about the Force itself.
