Having to limit to only 10 choices meant skipping a LOT of really great composers, I know........ And including John Williams did cross my mind, but that would have meant eliminating one of these legends. That is something I cannot do.

For the record, including Dr. Dre never crossed my mind.

I agree, if Williams was included then you would also have to include Danny Elfman, James Horner, etc. I think the ten listed are good comparisons for each other, although, I probably would have replaced Mahler with Orff.

    :)

Orff = One universally recognized famous work

Mahler = A pantheon of symphonic, choral and vocal brilliance

    Sorry.....no contest.

Although....I could guess Carmina Burana in 3 notes or less. Mahler's 7th would need a few more notes than that.

All these are great guys, though I'm partial to Mendellsohn and PUCCINI!! Gotta pick Bach for the Masses, Cantatas, Concerti, and solo instrument work. WOW! Mozart is my close second. I have a recording of BENNY GOODMAN playing a clarinet concerto. Awesome.

It's a good thing you left Williams, otherwiswe it would have been a pretty one sided affair! (Although, I do enjoy Jerry Goldsmith's work more) :)

Some other favorites of mine are Vivaldi and Holst :) If you listen to Holst's "The Planets", it's supposedly where alot of film composers got some of their influence. Great symphony that.

    BFwBR,

True that Mahler may have more "known" material, however, I do prefer Orff.

However, given the choice I'd take Mozart/Beethoven/Wagner over either of them.

I voted Tchaikovsky, but I'd also mention (and now prefer :) ) Prokofiev. Both very Williams-like!

It doesn't get much better than Dies Irae. :)

Anyone else here like P.D.Q. Bach? The oddest of J.S. Bach's twenty-odd children... ;)
