I'll be clichey and go for Timothy Zahn. Honestly, he managed to create one of the most compelling and fleshed-out villains in the galaxy far far away, without the Dark Side angst or weapons of mass destruction a la Sun Crusher & co. Thrawn is pure intellect. And the Thrawn Trilogy & the Hand of Thrawn duology remain my most favourite Star Wars stories.

Additionally, John Ostrander and Jan Durseema were an amazing force behind the comics series, which were very well executed. Also John Jackson Miller.

Stover. The reason I eventually came to like Obi-Wan Kenobi. :D

Jude Watson. She wrote the training series for both Ankian and Obi Won. I didn't really like the Ankian series, but the Obi Won one was really good, escecaily how he almost fell to the dark side.

Abel Peña, Matthew Stover and James Luceno, although I must say I wish we saw much more from Sean Stewart, who wrote the wonderful Yoda: Dark Rendezvous.

    1) Zahn. I was 12 when I stumbled across Heir to the Empire in the bookstore. I had no idea it was coming, no idea there was anything more to the Star Wars universe than just the three movies. I was hooked, completely and totally, from the very first page. There have been other good Star Wars novels since that one, but nothing will ever top Heir as my all-time favorite. The Thrawn trilogy is my favorite series. And the background that Zahn created was used as a basis for much of the EU to follow.

    2) Matthew Stover - not a lot of people talk about it, but NJO Traitor was incredible. It was so intense. I also thought his novelization of Ep III was really well done.

    3) James Luceno - I read Tarkin a few weeks ago and thought it was surprisingly good. Much better than I was anticipating.

    4) Michael Stackpole - I'm a big fan of his X-Wing series.

My favorite Star Wars author is John Jackson Miller. Kenobi is my all-time favorite Star Wars novel, and Knight Errant and A New Dawn are favorites of mine, too.

Timothy Zahn is really good, too. Thrawn trilogy, Hand of Thrawn, Scoundrels, Survivor's Quest also solid reads.

I have a love/hate realtionship with James Lucino. Loved (or at least liked) Labyrinth of Evil, Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, and Tarkin. His Agents of Chaos stuff was okay. But I hated Millennium Falcon and Darth Plagius.

When it comes to authors whose only SW novels are in the newcanon EU, I'd say Claudia Gray ranks pretty high. Also Jason Fry.

Stackpole from the old Canon. LOVED the X-Wing novels.

From the new canon I would say Claudia Gray for sure.

James Luceno is my favorite. I have read more of his novels than any other EU author. Darth Plagueis and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader are my favorite works from him, due to the way they explain the dark side.
