Lit Why a Wookiee?

Last night I was thinking about Chewbacca in the upcoming TLJ and HS movie and I got to thinking, what if Chewbacca wasn't a Wookiee? Like, what would have been another cool species that could of worked with Han.

I understand that Wookiees were created first, but in an in-universe explanation like what if Han saved Chewbacca, but he wasn't a Wookiee.

I know this was worded weird, but I have not been getting a lot of sleep. So, I thought maybe a Selonian since they're from Corellia like Han is or another big brute species like a Herglic.

The original design for Chewie was reused in Rebels for the Lasat species.

 

Though more popularly used in Rebels, Lasats originated in WEG's Alien Encounters.

 

I have learned from these boards that anything you think started somewhere other than WEG likely started with WEG

Wasn't Han supposed to be a different looking alien than (what we now know as) a Lasat? I think he was depicted as such in The Star Wars comic.
