What the hell is going on?

I can understand the scooter craze, beany babies, rubiks cube, the resurgence od spinning tops, yo-yos, whatever.

But what is the appeal of rolling up a bedsheet and going out on the street with your mates and cracking it like a whip? Other that the potential to take someone's eye out, I don't really see why this craze had taken New Zealand (Auckland?) by storm.

If you're a teenager reading this, explain yourself.

And if you're an adult, why aren't you making these commercially and making a quick buck while the fad is still hot?

Do you know what I'm talking about? Hoards of 10-14 year old boys on the streets cracking these things?

Or is it just limited to Auckland (presently)?

    I'm thinking it's just Auckland.

This will never be as cool as chatter rings. But really, what could be?

Sounds like something the kids at Vic Uni would do.

I can't say I've seen anyone doing this, but maybe I don't get out enough. Maybe you could take some digital photos for us, jp.

The chatter rings craze was annoying. They were cool though, but they made that annoying sound.

havent seen it down here - must be because all the beedsheets are needed on the bed right now :)

I think its the enjoyment of inflicting pain that has got this fad going, I remember back in High school during the Hacky craze when we got bored of the regular game we soaked the hacky in water and played Brand-tag.

No no no. You've got it all wrong. These kids just stand on the front of their house (on foot path or what not) and just crack them like a bull whip. They don't flick eachother. Just:

    "crack"

    "crack"

    "crack"

    and occasionally "CRACK"

Honestly, that's all they're doing. I've seen them today. A gang of 5 kids on BMX's but with whip-sheets in their hands as they rode. Obviously to find a good park or hill to stand in and crack away. :p

Honestly, I'm tempted to drive around Ranui or Henderson with my digital camera and find some boys willing to let me film them do it, just to post it online here for all to witness.

So, seems to be limited (so far) to West Auckland.

You probably wouldn't have to ask them ... if you stay in the car, and just take the picture out one of the windows ... if they see you, drive away quickly :)

Maybe there's gonna be an invasion of the central, south & eastern and north shore suburbs, and these crafty weapons made of nothing more than old sheets will foil any regular weapon detection method.

Then we'll see who mocks da westies!

The only problem the little Maori boys haven't thought of is that you need to be within at least 3 feet for the sheet-whip to inflict physical pain. But the crack probably deafens the target from a greater distance of 12 feet.

The only problem is, the north shore boys would hear the flocks of westies coming from a mile off, because they can't help but CONSTANTLY crack them. So surprise attacks are an impossibilty... perhaps they're going for the SHOCK AND AWE tactic, like Mr Bush used :p

I'm fairly confident Otara and the like will be in full force of this new craze. The cuzzy-bros have probably heard of the invasion of the North and East by now.
