CT Why are Stormtroopers so lightly armoured?

It's better to have those suits than be butt naked in a fight.

No. The Republic wiped out an entire Jedi order. Order 66 was issued before the formation of the Empire.

There is a point made somewhere that with the advent of blaster technology, no armour is fully protective any more.

Which was why the Rebel Alliance don't really bother any more, except to minimise damage from explosion flak and suchlike.

Stormtrooper armour can withstand glancing blows from blasters, and any kind of melee weapon, but a direct hit would get through.

That was before the EU started creating materials that could withstand lightsabres, such as cortosis, and beskar.

Clonetrooper armour in the MedStar novels were getting penetrated by flechettes for crying out loud.

No idea what First Order stormtrooper armour can resist. A bit disappointed that their helmet filters only do smoke.

 

Not necessarily. The Great Jedi Purge was continued after Order 66 when the Emperor tasked Vader to hunt rogue Jedi.

 

They're lightly armoured so the battles can be competitive and interesting for the viewer.

 

The Republic was already turning into the Empire by AOTC, it just wasn't made offical until ROTS. The two are one in the same but the Empire is a twisted and perverted version of the Republic, mirroring Vader being a twisted version of Anakin.
