Perhaps due to lack of advertising, or the difficult task of packaging this movie within a trailer, the upcoming near-future sci-fi drama Children of Men is not getting a lot of buzz or attention.

The film takes place in 2027, and for the last 18 years, women have been infertile. No one knows why, or how, it happened, but it did. The world is slowly falling into chaos and anarchy as more and more people realize that the end of the world, of the human race, is in sight, and there's nothing left to live for. When a young girl miraculously becomes pregnant, she must be safely escorted across England and delivered to the Human Project, a group of scientists seeking a cure for mankind's extinction.

Now, I have to say, for me this was not a very interesting trailer. But I like Cuaron's style, and when I had the opportunity to see the film a month ago, at the West Coast premiere, I took it.

Simply put: it is one of the best films I've seen all year. Possibly THE best of the year, and possibly the best of the last SEVERAL years.

Even though this is a spoiler thread, I don't want to be the first one to give anything away. The film releases tomorrow (December 25). It's not a Christmas movie -- there's not a lot of joy in it, and the ending is ambivalently hopeful at best. But this is genuinely a work of cinematic brilliance. Go see it in its first week, with a first-time audience. You'll be glad you did.
