Just a random thought that flitted through my head.

They can lift a space ship, rocks, droid. and have even been seen giving themselves a boost.

But why not suspend their own bodies?

Be the first thing I'd do.

They are afraid of heights. Should they fly, they turn to the darkside.

    "Why can't Jedi fly?"

    Qui-Gon:

    "I'm...I'm having a vision-"

    Yoda;

"Quick! Pass it over you do. Almost gone it is!"

    Mace;

    "Patience master; I'll roll another..."

    Obi-Wan;

    "Too f!#@ing right!"

    :p

Flying requires both a happy thought and some pixie dust.

At one point in the Star Wars timeline, pixies were very easy to come by. But alas, they were hunted to extinction by the evil Gungans who found them to be tasty morning muncies.

As well - those Jedi are so gosh darn serious all the time that it's difficult to get a happy thought out of any of them. The happiest any of 'em ever got was Yoda when he discovered a flash light amongst Luke's things. But that's it. The rest of the time... morose. Each and every one of them.

    And so no flying Jedi.

But a little known fact of the Star Wars universe is that Jedi can bounce. Yep - it's almost like their tops are made out of rubber and their bottoms are made out of springs. But that's another story...

    My 2 cents...

Jedi CAN fly.... but only in short bursts.

Jedi can lift many items from rocks to ship, but in doing so they deplete their Force power. Much like in the games, if the force power is sustained for a long amount of time, you run out.

    Argument (1)

Luke did all right with rocks and R2, but he ended up dropping both because he was distracted and he grew tired.

He tried the X-Wing but didn't have the strength. But I'm sure he could have been able to lift it if he were either rested or stronger in the Force.

    Argument (2)

E.T., or rather his species, was added in to the Star Wars universe in TPM. So with the Force like powers we saw E.T. use in "his" movie, I would consider him "trained in the Jedi arts". And we all know he made the bikes "fly".

    Argument (3)

If you go way back to the original Superman comics, Superman could "leap a building in a single bound", NOT "fly".
This adds to my initial thought...A Jedi's Force jump is in fact "flying".

Good points. I don't buy the ET one, but otherwise I hear ya.

I figured it was also a matter of concentration. Its like flexing a muscle, you can't keep it up forever.

This flight ability would make a good secondary parachute though....

In one of the most recent novels (The AOTC prequel written by A.D. Foster), one of the Jedi uses the force to levitate for a short time. I won't give more spoilers, but it was a really cool scene....:)

Besides, the late, great, Douglas Adams already taught us the true secret to flying.

Throw yourself at the ground very hard and miss!

    (everyone sing along...)
    Dashing and daring,
    Courageous and caring,
    Faithful and friendly,
    With stories to share.
    All through the forest,
    They sing out in chorus,
    Marching along,
As their song fills the air.

    Jedi Knights,
bouncing here and there and everywhere,
    High adventure that's beyond compare,
    They are the Jedi Knights.

Magic and mystery are part of their history,
Along with the secret of gummiberry juice.
    Their legend is growing,
    They take pride in knowing,
    They'll fight for what's right,
    In whatever they do.

    Jedi Knights,
bouncing here and there and everywhere,
    High adventure that's beyond compare,
    They are the Jedi Knights.

I was trying to set Rob's poem to a particular song, but I couldn't... best I came up with was the theme to Rocket Robin Hood.

Oh and Adam, the missing part is the tricky bit.

No - Rocket Robin Hood is a little more like this (hit it boys),

Come gather around me. Space travelers surround me. Hark now to the ballad of Rocket Robin Hood.
I may well confound you, astound you, spellbound you, with heroes and villains, the bad and the good.
Watch now as our rockets race here from afar. For now, with our Robin, we live on a star.
    Three. Two. One. Blast off!
Band of brothers, marching together. Heads held high in all kinds of weather.
With fiery blasts, our roaring rockets rise, beyond the Earth, beyond the skies!
At the sight of Robin, take your stand, with the gallant leader of our band.
Send a joyous shout throughout the land! For Rocket Robin Hood!

    OK, what is scarier?

Rob knew the lyrics so well he could post the reply this quickly or... no nothing can be scarier than that.

"When one body exerts a Force on another body, the second body exerts an oppositely directed Force of equal magnitude on the first body."

Yoda: "Strong with the Force, Newton was."
