They also discussed(at least in the novel) if Palpatine didn't resign after the war they would let Anakin betray and go against his friend for the "Greater Good". But even themselves could not do such thing. Push Anakin to do it would only increase the gap between him and the Jedi Council. Even Obi Wan admitted he was not sure should Anakin trust the council again if they ask him to go against Palpatine.

    Slowpokeking, you've done it again.

Maybe this is a language thing, but what do you mean by "let" ?

Again, what do you mean by this?

    When/where did this happen?

The last part did happen in the novelization-- Obi-Wan argued with Mace and Yoda that asking Anakin to spy on Palpatine was a very bad idea because of their friendship.

Beyond that I have no idea what he's talking about.

Slowpokeking, the Council had Anakin spy on Palpatine because they thought he was either being influenced by a Sith or was a Sith himself, and Anakin, as the Jedi closest to Palpatine, was in the best position to spy. And yes, take him down if necessary, which Mace came close to doing.

Why not spy on him with the Security Cameras in his office?

That's not all, they dislike Palpatine not just because Sidious, they suspect Palpatine might not step down from power after the war.

Obi Wan and Yoda agreed on

That's why they were trying to use Anakin to watch Palpatine. But it's clearly not the case.

Right. And he won't step down from power because he's Sidious.

I'm not seeing the difference here. I hope you aren't saying that being a totalitarian dictator would be OK as long as said dictator isn't a Sith Lord.

He is a politician first, then a Sith, they didn't suspect he was Sidious but worried about his ambition.

It's not OK, but use Anakin to go against his his friend would push Anakin to the side of Palpatine, which is a dumb move. They were pushing Anakin to do something even they could not do.

Actually they did suspect he was Sidious, or that Sidious was somewhere in his inner circle and therefore influencing him. Mace Windu thought that Sate Pestage was Sidious.

I'm not saying reveal Sidious is a bad idea, but use Anakin to go against his friend Palpatine is one.

Even if Palpatine is not Sidious, just some ambitious politician who refuse to step down, they would still go against him.

Ask Anakin to spy and betray his friend is not a smart move.

I doubt it. The Jedi have shown themselves loyal to the Senate and the Chancellor almost to a fault, no matter who that Senate and Chancellor are.

I agree with you to a point that asking Anakin to spy on Palpatine was not the best idea, but I understand why they did it.

    Palpatine has planned it.

Every move he makes is like a chess master. He is always 2 steps ahead of them. He moves pieces here and there anticipating his opponents to react on what he has predicted.

He knows if he appoints Anakin as a council member, the Jedi Order will counter it having them to spy on Palpatine putting tension between Anakin and the Jedi Order.

How else does Palpatine knows that the Jedi ordered Anakin to spy on him?????

Also Palpatine knows that if he suggests to the Jedi that it should be Anakin who captures Greivous, then the Jedi will go against it by sending Obiwan, giving more separation between Anakin and the Jedi.

Also Obiwan, the only Jedi that has a chance to sway Anakin against Palpatine, would be out of the way.

The more the Jedi go against Palpatine's suggestions the more Anakin gravitates to Palpatine.

And that's Palpatine's plan all along.

The Council knew that putting Anakin in that position was not in his best interest. However, by ROTS, they are at a point where the dark side is clouding their vision and the war has enabled Palpatine to stay on longer than he should have, gaining more and more emergency powers. Since they don't know the full story and are having problems using the Force, they are quite desperate at this point. So they take advantage of Palpatine's request to have Anakin on the Council by having him spy. The Council knows what they are doing is dangerous, and they know that they are taking advantage of Anakin and his trust in them. However, due to the circumstances and because he is in the best position to do it, they have him spy on Palpatine anyway.

Well said. The characterization of Palpatine as the manipulative "Chess Master" is one of the few things I think the PT got right.

Unfortunately, The Jedi's plan ended up backfiring since it led to the complete annihilation of the Jedi Order. It's true that the Jedi made a mistake in making Anakin spy on Palpatine because by doing this, they practically handed him over to the Sith thereby fulfilling the same predictions that they've made of him in TPM.

They pushed him to watch Palpatine to see if Palps had any sex tapes the Jedi could use to blackmail him with.

Anakin was already very close to Palpatine, and Palpatine was a very smart guy. To use anyone else would have been blatantly obvious. Obviously, given his nature as the Dark Lord of the Sith, Palpatine was able to see though the Jedi's philosophy anyways and used the situation to his advantage as he drew Anakin closer and closer to the Dark Side.

Ruling the galaxy and annihilating the Jedi Order was Palpatine’s ultimate goals and would have happened regardless of the Jedi having Anakin spying on Palpatine or not. And by that time Anakin was already firmly the grasp of the Sith – had been for years – so whether he had received his assignment or not, Anakin would have continued to associate with Palpatine – and would most likely still have joined Palpatine to gain the power to save Padmé.

If they were so 'suspect' of Palpatine why didn't they just do a midi chlorian count of his blood. Like Qui gon did with Anakin in TPM? Pretty sure Palpatines would've been quite high. Almost bound to be who your after :)

Ronhar Kim was supposed to take midichlorian counts of several Senate members when it was suspected that the Sith was someone close to Palpatine.

Palpatine learned of this, and sent Kim on the front lines as a sitting duck; he was killed immediately.

Think about it before trying to be smart. Chancellor we believe there's a Sith in the Senate and as part of our investigations were doing a midi chlorian count of everyone. Why would he have anything o hide? Or maybe it just points out how useless and stupid the plot was.
