Why did they torture Solo?

and not ask questions?

 

Simple answer to this, Vader wanted to bring Luke to Cloud City and his way of doing that was to torture Luke's friends. Remember when Luke was doing his balancing trick on Dagobah and he suddenly stopped because he sensed his friends' suffering? Vader knew Luke couldn't stay away if his friends were in pain.

 

And it was probably a grudge Vader held. Remember who kinda helped Luke blow up the Death Star and caused Vader to go spinning through space?

 

Han? oh yeah Vader is really mad at Han!

I agree with everyone. It was a way for Vader to get Luke to come to cloud city and Vader was angry at Solo for the events from ANH.

But heres my question, why didn't they torture Leia???

 

Maybe they didn't torture Leia because she was a woman. Vader was already mad at Han for shooting his TIE.

 

The force. It told him "Leave this woman alone. In time you will learn why."

 

i think they tortured Han for the reasons Amanamans and Sil presented. As to why they didn't toruture Leia, she probably knew more about the Rebels than Han, so they could questiom her. Which is probably why Vader wanted her to come to his ship, the Executor.

 

Who's to say they never questioned Han?

1) Might've been considered too "adult" back then
2) Already tried, didn't work.
3) We never really heard or saw anything that said Leia wasn't tortured.

 

i have given thought to that too on why he doesn't torture leia. In ANH, thats all he wanted for the most part, I think he should have tried to finish the job there, but then again, the whole Falcon messing up Vader's shot in the trench on the Death Star comes into play, but you would think there would be some yearning to punch luke's buttons a little more by freezing her too

 

They did it for grins and giggles.

 

I go with Coolmon's #3. If they didn't torture Leia, where was she during the time Chewie was alone in the cell?

 

They could also have been testing the torture device on solo. Leia had already proven hard to torture in ANh so Vader might have been making sure his machine was useful before using it on Leia.

maybe leia was in another room like chewie's listening to high pitched noises.

 

On a sort of related topic, what where those noises for anyways? Whatever they were, they sure seemed to upset Chewie quite a bit.

Jedi_John, I figured as much. One might even go so far as to say that it was the Wookiee's torture. Meaning that they all got some form of torture (Vader is one hell of a Sadist).

The novelization even has floodlights in the cell on Chewie, whom I think pounds on the ceiling and stops them. I don't think it would be a good idea to torture Chewie like they did Han, because you'd have to be in the same room, and Chewie just might break his bonds...

 

I presonally think that they did torture Leia, just like Han.
After the Storm Troopers bring in Han, another group brings Leia also.
I just think it would have been redundant to show another Leia torture scene (ala ANH) and it also would have been more traumatic to the audience watching what was done to Han be done to Leia, so they sided with good taste and showed Han instead.
I think Leia is just tougher than Han, having already been tortured by Vader and not cracking once, and that is why she didn't seem as broken as Solo.
As to why Vader tortured Han, Leia, and Chewie (with that dog whistle on steroids), I think he did it for the same reason Mr. Blonde tortured the cop in Reservoir Dogs...
He didn't do it for information or to get to Luke (well, maybe a little bit to get to Luke), but really I think the simple reason is that he tortured Han, Leia, and Chewie because he could. Vader was just that evil in ESB.
