Why didn't ledge break when Maul slashed at it?

Maul was tryiing to kill kenobi and slashed at the ledge when kenobi was hanging.
Why didn't the ledge break if a lightsaber can break anything except another llightsaber blade

 

At that point all Maul was doing was trying to intimidate Kenobi.

 

When he was hacking away at the ledge or at the near end of the fight

 

He was slashing the floor and the edge of the pit. His intent was not to break it, he was trying to gloat in Kenobi's face about defeating him. It was that same overconfidence that allowed Kenobi to jump out of the pit and kill Maul. Obi-Wan got lucky that Maul didn't just kill him right off the bat.

 

Yeah, he was just making sparks and taunting Obi.

But lightsabers can't break anything. Examples of which are: Energy shields, cortosis ore, and several other unnamed metals.

He was just brushing it to make sparks saying ha ha your dead.

 

Yeah, he was just barely skirting his blade along the edge to mock Obi Wan. It's kinda the trade mark "movie villian taunting the hero in peril, giving him just enough time to come up with a quick plan and kill him." Happens in Bond movies all the time.

 

Yes the classic " "You expect me to talk!" "No, i expect you to die Mr. Bond" " syndrome...

 

If Obi-Wan hadn't thought of what he thought of, how do you guys think Maul would have killed him? Getting on his chest and hanging his saber down in an attempt to slash him? A simple force push?

 

Lightsabers have 2 modes:

1) Up Close and Personal.
2) Hello, You're Dead.
