PT Why didn't Qui-Gon wager Artoo along with the pod?

Just a thought. Watto told him that no pod is worth two slaves, so why not throw Artoo into the deal instead of settling for just Anakin?

Damn it, I just realized why: He can gamble with the Queen's ship to get them off the planet, because getting off the planet is vital to his mission. If they lose that bet, it's still understandable that he did it.
He would be hard-pressed to explain why he would lose the Queen's astromech in an attempt to free a slave that has nothing to do with their mission, though.

But still: Would that really stop Qui-Gon?

Being able to fix the ship in space might be nice, also :p

Artoo isn't his droid to bet.

Neither is the Queen's ship, but as I realized, there is a difference.
Besides, as Boba pointed out, losing Artoo could seriously jeopardize the mission. Not even Qui-Gon would risk that.

We established that, but a gambler is more likely to bet on a ship than a droid.

Just a question, but are R2 units even worth that much?

I remember in TPM, as they were attempting to fix the shield, there were several R2 units present (and this is just for one ship). Likewise, in ROTS, when Obi-Wan loses R4, he doesn't seem overly concerned.

Plus, if we look at the scene in question, Watto says that no pod is worth two slaves, not by a long shot, indicating that at best a pod is worth one slave. R2 would have to be equal to a pod racer in value in order to make it a worthwhile exchange, but I doubt he is.

FWIW, it is the Queen's ship, and the thing doesn't look cheap to begin with. Although given that the Rebellion has plenty 30 years later, I doubt they're all that expensive.

Some r2 units are better than others, and Obi Wan doesn't make a fuss about r4 because he has doesn't have an attachment to it.

I guess my point was simply that I found Watto's dialogue implied that a podracer was worth about the same as a slave. For Qui-Gon to be able to successfully gamble for Shmi's freedom, then, wouldn't R2 have to be worth about as much as a pod? I just think that it is highly unlikely that R2 is worth that much and it's why Qui-Gon probably didn't even attempt an offer.

I actually find it likely that Artoo is worth more than a pod racer, considering how advanced he is. The fact that the Rebels have heaps of astromechs in ANH probably only means that they've become cheaper over the years. After all, 32 years pass between that episode and this one.

What I find strange is why Qui-gon didn't just take Anakin's mom with them when they left Tatooine. Since slavery is illegal in the Republic, Qui-goin has every right and reason as a Jedi to free her. Why not? They had to leave the planet in a hurry anyway.

    Well,

    1) Tatooine is not in the Republic, Jedi have no jurisdiction there.
    2) The explosive device planted in slaves, remember? They blow you up.

Huh? I guess that would explain it, but I never saw that in the movie. Was that explained in the novelization/EU or did I just miss it? =|

Anakin would have turned much sooner if Qui Gon made that big of a boo boo. No Sidious required.

In which comic did Biggs had to steal a bunch astromechs? It seemed ridiculous, the rebels should be able to buy those easily.
