Calgary Why do you love Star Wars??

At work last night, as I was booking the Expo weekend off, and explaining WHY I needed it off, it suddenly dawned on one of the managers why I seemed familiar to him when I was hired. He said, 'You were here for the premiere of RotS, weren't you? You were one of them!'
Very proudly, I answered, 'YES. I AM.'

Another manager asked me, why? And I said, Why what??
She said, 'Why Star Wars? What's so great about it? Why do you love it so much??'

Hmmm.........I thought it was an interesting question, coming from a non fan. So I told her..........

.... for me, Star Wars rescued me many times in my childhood. It took me to new worlds, taught me about change, about finding inner strength and inspired me to become more than I ever thought possible. It taught me that I shouldn't be afraid to be myself, to believe in the impossible and that there is good in this world. Lessons about honour, family, friendship and loyalty. Every movie has a lesson - and I discovered each lesson was relatable to my life.

Besides the philosphical stuff, it's just plain AWESOMELY INCREDIBLEY COOL. Light sabers? WICKED AMAZING. The JEDI? I can't even describe how BadASS they are. Villain? No one beats VADER. Space ships, wookiees, YODA - the list is endless.

So - what are your reasons for loving Star Wars as much as you do??

 

When I was younger, in elementary school and jr high I didn't have many friends. I was more introverted, and I was kind of a nerd. In fact, all throughout jr high there was only one person who I would have called my friend.
I remember very specifically eating lunch one afternoon with my dad and sister and him telling us about Star Wars; I was entranced. I convinced him to rent Return of the Jedi and I instantly fell in love. In many ways Star Wars became my best friend, it took me to places where I didn't feel lonely, I found kindred spirits in Han Solo and Luke Skywalker; and perhaps most importantly, Star Wars was always there for me when I needed a friend, and I've carried that blessing ever since.
High school was a different time for me, I became more outgoing, I made friends, lots of friends. And by the end of grade 12 I was definately one of the more popular people in my school. And I carried my love for Star Wars all the way through. Star Wars allowed me to find my inner Jedi; it gave me the push to go out and meet new people, make new friends, and take risks. In grade 12 I was cast in a leading role in our musical, I played Bert from Mary Poppins; I had finally found my way out of my shell all thanks to the support, encouragement, and friendship that Star Wars had always unconditionally offered me.
When once, I would hide my love for all things Star Wars; during a time when I was afraid it would just give the mean kids more reasons to call me "nerd" and "loser", now I wear my love on my sleeve. I'm a confident, outgoing person and I don't care what anyone else says about me. I'm empowered with the force and there can be no greater strength then that.

 

I think the fact that every scifi flick even today is measured up to SW says a lot about the achievement. As a 6 year old at the movies with my Dad, it was all about the memories of seeing something so amazing. It was about opening my Xmas presents and sighing in dissapointment at the boxes from 'Tip Top' only to be instantly elated when I opened them to find Chewbacca and C3P0 under the socks and underwear.

Today, it's the feeling that I can give my kids the exact same experience and more! I mean, not many kids can say they a real life Clonetrooper! I think also today that SW means a lot more to me since I have friends to share it with...

 

Why do I love Star Wars?

That is a great question but at the same time a hard one so I?ll give it a try hopefully I don?t ramble too much. My first memory of star wars was going to the movies in Fort Mac when we lived there back in the day as it is one of the only memories I have of living there. Watching the movie I was mesmerized by everything on the screen but deathly afraid of the Rancor monster as my mom can vouch for. After that it became imbedded in the fabric that is me from my Darth Vader birthday cakes to going and buying the Jedi Luke and Rancor from consumers? distribution for my birthday.

When we moved back to Nova Scotia I watched at least one of the classic trilogy movies once a week or whenever it rained with Stacy and our cousin Nathan. Watching star wars it gave you a sense of you could do anything or go anywhere the world had no limits. Of course as I became older into my teens my interests changed but star wars was always there even if it was down on the list. It really wasn?t until the special editions came out in theaters that the flame was re-kindled as Stacy and I and some friends waited an hour and a half to see A New Hope. After that we saw all the special editions numerous times and it was amazing each time and when word came out that Lucas was coming back to the galaxy he created it was all we could talk about. One of our last days before moving out here we saw enemy of the state and the only thing I remember of that movie was the episode 1 teaser trailer.

Star wars just makes me feel good as it gives you a positive outlook even in the crazy times of everyday life. I look back to when I was a kid and the star wars memories are some of the best as it was just a simpler time back then. Star Wars has also introduced me to many great people as it is something that a lot of fans have no outlet for. So when you can meet other fans with the same passion as you it is awesome you?re finally with people that get it. It just has a great story, characters you care about, and an all around positive message. It has something everyone can relate to weather that be the urging for adventure, the turmoil of your inner soul, or man I would love to swing a laser sword.

When it really comes down to it Star Wars just makes people feel good and that?s all you really need.

Why do I love Star Wars?

When my brother and dad took me to a theater back in '77, upon arriving there I saw a line of people going around a block of the place. Confused and puzzled, I had no idea what we were doing there. Before we left home, they tried to explain to me where we're going, and considering I had trouble hearing and speaking back then - this was a blessing in disguise.

Standing in line with the people, I took my time absorbing the event unfolding before me. Saw a big stand up poster of what looked like a tall furry monster holding a crossbow-gun, and asked my brother urgently "monster movie???" He laughed and explained something that didn't make sense and it still didn't comfort me. I was really under the impression that we were going to see some frakkin' monster movie.

So I swallowed whatever confidence I had left and entered the dark musky theatre and took my place with my brother and dad.

And moments later, I'll never forget it....the thunder of music hitting me hard on my hearing aids...the big a$$ed STAR WARS logo...little ship flyin by...only to be chased by this unholy ship (you guys know the rest).

Since that moment, I've imagined, dreamed, and loved everything possible within my imaginations. I've learned to cope with the dark side of reality, not so much to escape from it, but certainly become more aware of it, and develop the wisdom and confidence to endure it.

So there ya go, Georgie did teach me something after all despite the fact he's turned into something he's always hated - the Empire itself.
