Why does Luke wear black??

I thought that it was Kenner that designated it as a "Jedi Outfit" Althogh when I was a kid & read that on the figure package I had visions of a Young Vader & OB1 dressed that way.

What I also noticed was that Lukes Robe is kinda a cross between a Cape (Vader) & a hooded robe (Jedi Robe) I wonder if this was done intenionally or by accident.

 

He wears black because black is beautiful..

I wrote that as a joke because i'm black and only a few people on here would figure out why I would write that..

I'd say it was intentional given that when Mark Hamill said "It looks Vaderish." George responded "That's the idea."

 

Luke's outfits can be thought of as a progression in the Jedi arts.

white clothes= white belt
brown clothes= brown belt
black clothes= black belt

Luke starts out as a novice Jedi in ANH (equivalent to a white belt in Karate). As he becomes more experienced as a Jedi, his clothes darken (advancing to a brown belt). By the time of ROTJ, Luke's "skills are complete" and he's at the highest level of proficiency, represented by his black outfit and belt.

As others have mentioned, I think it's apparent that Lucas also wanted to emphasize a Vaderish quality in Luke. This is the film where Luke must decide where his allegiance to the Force lies, and this is when Luke is closest to the dark side.

In addition, Luke might have chosen to wear black because he realized how sexy that color looks on him.

 

He wears black because like his father he's slowly transitioning to the dark side. Unlike his dad, he makes the right decision at the last moment

SW is obviously big on Eastern thought & philosophy. White in Chinese is the color for evil; so perhaps there's something in Luke wearing black, which is the opposite of white, and therefore, of evil.

Besides, Lucas draws on a lot of cultures for his movies. It's not hard to see the Geisha girl influence on the whole Queen Amidala TPM thing.

LOL shows how dumb I am. I didn't know Geisha girls were prostitutes. I thought they were dancers/performers or something

 

Ree is right; from what I understand, Geisha are more like companions, but well, it's still a decidedly odd pick to base Amidala's look on.

Oh well, at least she wasn't clad in a $9.75 white dress from K-Mart.

Luke might be wearing black for any of the above reasons but one thing is absolutely true - he looks great. And he is The Man in RotJ!

 

Maybe hes an Oakland Raiders fan lol. Seriously I think they wanted him to mirror Anakin
