This is a supernnatural phenomenom to put it best that will be touched upon in Episode III. Jedi normally die like most people, notice in the arena battle in Attack of the Clones the bodies of jedi all around. We will learn how the dissapearing trick works in III.

You can find a similiar thread here, in the SWC.

But, I think it all has to do with how you prepare for that before you die. ;)

Darth Maul was sliced in half.

Darth Vader was more machine than man.

    Qui-Gon was burned.

well Gui-gon actually died from the light sabre thrust not from being burned.

According to the EU only Jedi Masters vanish when they die whilst Knights do not (see "Tales of the Jedi: Redemption").

If you are a believer of the validity of the Expanded Universe then I think this serves as a pretty good indicator as to why some Jedi vanish - because they attain the spiritual level of JEDI MASTER.

This is the million dollar question in SW right now, and its answer has been all but promised in Ep3.

Accoridng to Lucas, it's a trick Obi-Wan learned from Yoda sometime as a Jedi. Why Yoda didn't share this trick with anyone else is beyond me. :p

Yoda didn't share it with anyone because Mace Windu, Kit Fisto and Ki-Adi Mundi are too cool for Force-heaven.

but darth vader, darth maul and qui gon don't

Vader/Anakin did. He supposedly did when he was on the shuttle escaping the second Death Star. Luke only burned Vader's armor at the end - not the body.

As for Maul and Qui-Gon, I'm sure we'll get that explained to us in Ep3.
