POTENTIAL IN-UNIVERSE ANSWER: Perhaps it was in use for something considered more pressing at the time when the battle broke out in which the Death Star plans were stolen.

REAL ANSWER: Lucas and pals hadn't come up with it yet.

Yep. It was built in the Fondor shipyards some time before ESB.

I don't think the Executor was ready until after Yavin went down.

Yep, it wasn't finished until about 6 months after the Battle of Yavin.

I remember reading somewhere that Palpatine gave him the Executor as a gift for doing some important task for him. Could just be EU fodder though, so take it for what it's worth.

Regardless of how you feel on the whole EU thing (don't start please) everyone seems to be able to agree that Executor wasn't ready to be launched at the time of ANH.

I remember having the impression (as a kid) that becaue of the destruction of DS, that the Empire built the Super Star Destroyer as a method of revenge against the Rebellion. That was the whole point of showing it overshadow a regular SD during the first glimpse in ESB.

GL probably didn't want the entrance of ANH to go on longer than it already was. ;)

Why would he use the SSD when he had the Death Star?

and except for the opening and one or two later scenes, we don't even see the ANH Star Destroyer much in ANH. It would have been a pity to have the Executor, but barely see it.

plus, I think having the Death Star AND the SSD would have been a bit of overkill. The Executor isn't as prominent in RotJ as in TESB, after all. One freaking huge killing thing is enough for Lucas, it seems. And I'd agree with him ;)

It wasn't built yet. The Executor was built for Vader between ANH and ESB. Check the OS' datafile on it.

She may have went down to three A-wings (mostly), but the Executor is a beauty. It' s my favorite ship in the saga.

    >>What do you mean?<<

Just joking that one huge killing machine was enough for Lucas, until he went and made a second death star in ROTJ .

It makes you wonder how good the Empire's resources were if they could build two Death Stars and a Super Star Destroyer in just under a year or so.

Actually, from the begening of ANH to the end of ROTJ,it's 4 total years. :) Still, that's a relativly short amount of time to build all the stuff they did. ;)
