Why is Derek 'Hobbie' Klivian called 'Hobbie,' anyway?

I've never heard it explained. Has anyone else?

Maybe someone can write a fanfic about Hobbie getting his nickname.

I've seen two fanfics on the subject (nothing official, though). One suggested that he got the name because he was going out with several girls at the same time. When they caught on to his antics he explained :Well, a guy ought to have a hobby to keep him busy during down time." (or something like that)

The second one harks back to his youth. He was pretty much of a nerd and had few friends. But he had a lot of different and changing hobbies to occupy his time. The bullies started calling him 'Hobbie' as a joke.

 

Which fanfics were these? And where can they be found?

I posted a link to one of them in the Hobbie Klivian Fan Club, which is somewhere in the depths of the board.

And Derek is called Hobbie because the writers decided it sounded cool.

 

I wonder if GL came up with it.

 

At least he's not always "Bugbite".

No, you're not. Somebody spelled it wrong in the comics. It's actually Klivian.

I think it's like most fighter pilot's call signs: you usually don't know why they call themselves such odd names, it's a part of the piloting mythos. If you ask him, he'll tell you a different answer for every time.

But, just for future reference, GL was the one who named a pilot Hobbie: it's in the script and the filmed version of Empire Strikes Back: he's a fellow Rogue, flying a snowspeeder with Luke. At one point there's a crash, and Luke calls out "Hobbie?" but there's no response, which has led many fans to assume Hobbes was blown away in ESB, so the Hobbie in the comics isn't the same guy. I choose to believe (being that I'm a big Hobbie fan) that his comms were shot up, but he survived, and eventually made it to an X wing to escort one of the last transports off Hoth.

Well Hobbie was meant to die crashing into General Veers' walker, killing them both. But the never made it to the movie so Hobbie was spared! Oh and Veers too...
