This is what I was saying. In the OT days it was just a meaningless title that Vader had. Palpatine wa never referred to as a Sith before TPM was released.

Luke is important because he is a Jedi and the Jedi have long fought alongside the Republic and the Alliance. A Jedi is necessary now.

From the first chapter of TFA novelization:

"SHE NEEDED HIM. And he was nowhere to be found. There was no one else she could rely on. No one like her brother. No one else at all, now that the New Republic stood on the verge of implosion, of destruction, of complete collapse."

"She could not let something like [the destruction of Alderaan] happen again, to any other world, to any other people. It was her responsibility, and the weight of it was heavy. Too heavy? Easier if she had help. The kind of help only her brother was capable of providing."

"No time for sardonic reflection now, she told herself. No time for extended, lengthy discussion. Times were desperate. The ruthless First Order was on the march, threatening to overwhelm the shaky framework of the weak, increasingly vulnerable, and still-developing New Republic. Where was her brother?"

Sounds like Leia realizes the power of the First Order lies with the Dark Side and the only way they stand a chance is with the help of Luke, the last Jedi.

I think Luke is important the Resistance for a couple reasons.

The first is the most obvious, he is the only person left in the galaxy to train people in the ways of the Light Side, that we know of.

Secondly, he is a symbol to unite behind. His heroics are the stuff of legend. He was known through the galaxy for being the one to destroy the first Death Star, and then proceeded to defeat the Emperor himself. This is a man you want with your cause, morale wins wars.
