Agreed. Leia was in the political spotlight, and had previous ties to Vader. Were she to be trained, it would be way too risky. Luke, on the other hand, was an unheard of farmboy from a backwater planet, who suddenly shows up and saves the day. It was easier to train him, because he was relatively unknown.

When Anakin goes to Yoda in ROTS to tell him of his torn feelings, Yoda tells him that he must detach himself from any feelings, that he must not fear losing what he loves. Jedi's are expected to live a monk life existence

    another question then:

in ROTJ, yoda/obi1 tell luke that leia is his sister
presumably this is in case luke fails aginst vader then leia can become the "next hope"

however if luke were to have failed and been killed, who would leia learn the ways of the force of (assuming she cannot see obi1 & yoda as ghosts)???

That is why Luke could not fail. If he failed at that point, there was no hope left.

Leia being trained would be to hard how do you keep a polititian being trained in the force a secret.

If Palpatine/Sidious could have been force oriented and hide this from the Jedi right under there noses, then I do believe Leia or even Luke could have lived different lives and still be trained to be Jedi under Vader/Sidious' noses. Leia could still be a Princess or even a senator and train herself, with Yoda and Obiwan helping, to be a Jedi spy. Luke likewise even as a senator or in a military capacity be a Jedi spy and noone would have to be the wiser. Like a James Bond meets ALIAS style of movie. Secret but still with alot of action. And, they could even know they were related, so not to have that "KISS" in Empire!

I do agree that Yoda & Obiwan realize that even after a thousand years of Jedi peace that this one aspect of having no emotional attachments is wrong. Could be the reason for them to wait and let Luke & Leia form their own identities before letting them in on that family secret.

This storyline, I believe, would have been a little more exciting/interesting to watch unfold.

    I could be wrong.

Why can't Yoda sense who it is Anakin is feeling for? Why does Yoda not investigate something as serious as this from someone he knows is powerful? (Sounds like a good question for another thread) The Jedi (Yoda) want Anakin, or any Jedi, to just accept the death of loved ones/friends with out any mourning? Do you think George Lucas is telling us something personal or getting us to just believe this is one of the reasons the Jedi failed?
