Usually if you're struggling with pain, actually hitting that area can cause a numbness to that pain. Thus the purpose in this case, numb the pain slightly to allow for better concentration to use the force better.

Anger is his fuel. He works himself repeatedly into a sithy-snit, smashing whatever is at hand. Beating his wound would be irritating, and feed his need to be irked.

I doubt this is the in-universe intention, but I like it.

It could be to show his rage. It could also be to remind the audience that he's been injured, so we take that into account when Rey starts kicking his butt in battle.

On my first viewing I thought that he was randomly beating himself in the chest, like a gladiator. :D

Its actually a dark side healing tactic called the Sith Heal Hit. He's fueling dark side energy into each hit that cauterizes the wound eventually.

Cause Kylo is a fool to dumb to use his lightsaber to cauterize his wound.

I agree with this, just finished watching a favorite film of mine in which a character I truly dig had his vital organs pierced by arrows. He immediately stopped the blood flow by aggressively tapping the pressure points around those organs with his fingers.

So Kylo is doing something similar although not as sophisticated.

I also think it was a rage moment for him as well.

I don't know why he did it.. but man what an awesome little touch. Things like that can really bring a character to life

Some of the reasons mentioned already and he wanted to get hurt. It's why he displayed no defense against Finn. He actually wanted to get hit, it was the only way he could get through that fight due to the horrible injury. You could tell defense was his last worry

Not confronting Rey and Finn, his mission was to capture her and bring to Snoke

I get the feeling this was something Driver came up with in rehearsal or on his own, didn't feel scripted to me. (But obviously JJ was in on it because it had blood FX). I see it personally as a dark side thing, he's increasing his pain so he can be angrier and fight harder. But it also functions to show that, hey, this Kylo Ren guy is crazy.

Actually I think a better question would be that blaster blew up three troopers in the air.. but why did it only injure Kylo?

During this moment I literally was like YES! When I saw it. Shows so much about Kylos character when he should slow down he just keeps pushing or punching himself to keep going. It's like he's reminding himself and his opponents I'm the heir to the skywalker name a warrior by blood the blood you see on this very snow.

Just as when the EmPalSuRecon droids left Anakin's clothes burnt into his flesh, the dark side doesn't offer a very good health plan.

Simple... it was more of a grazing blow (he got hit low on the side) from a greater distance than a dead center shot at a closer distance.

How exactly was he supposed to find time to do that, when he already had to exert himself greatly in the force to catch Rey and Finn (one of the reasons why he was so exhausted and sweating when they ran into him)?

It's definitely not in the script that was released.
