Why was Wedge snubbed during the ANH medal ceremony?

I must have watched ANH at least 1,000 times since 1982 when I first saw it, and something just occured to me after seeing it for the upteenth time.

During the ceremony, we see Luke, Han, and Chewbacca getting medals for their heroics. Why not Wedge? Sure he wasn't there at the last second, but he was in one of the few snubfighters that survived and drew fire away from Luke until the last minute.

Wedge didn't get a medal because he left. He absorbed a shot, then took off and left Biggs and Luke to deal with Darth Vader and company. I'm sure he was happy just to have left when he did and not end up like Biggs.

Chewie did not get a medal but deserved one.

 

The two people that contributed the most to the destruction of the Death Star were awarded medals.

Yeah, Chewie got screwed. He did finally recieve a medal from Carrie Fisher at the 1998 MTV movies awards. Great moment.

 

Chewie was offered a medal at the end of ANH but declined in favor of a nice shampoo and scalp treatment.

 

I was reading through old issues of Bantha Tracks (artoonews.com) and somebody asked why Chewie was snubbed. The answer given was that Wookiees don't approve of medals, but Chewie was eventually given one in a private ceremony back on Kashyyyk.

After all, he's the one that convinced Han to go back and help.

So the MTV awards was actually his SECOND award, the lucky bastard

 

I thought they were given medals because they rescued the princess.

"Then, wordlessly, Princess Leia places gold medallions first around Han Solo's neck... then Luke Skywalker's. Chewbacca the Wookiee, too, will have his own medal... but he will have to put in on himself. Few space-princesses are that tall."

 

Wedge should have been awarded a medal at the second death star battle since he did not get one at the first death star battle. He did not do much. Han got it for assisting in the destruction, if he had not than Luke would have died and Chewie should have gotten a medal too.

Oh, come on. What was he supposed to do at that point? Wedge wouldn't even have been able to take any more shots for Luke because Vader wouldn't have wasted his time with a disabled X-wing while another one was still on target.

 

What about that anonymous surviving Y-Wing? What about him, whoever the heck he is?

Well, for one thing, he did save Luke once during the fight, before Gold Leader started his attack run. If he hadn't done that, the Death Star wouldn't have been destroyed.

I'm glad I saw all these answers now. I can just picture Wedge at the ceremony now.

Wedge: Hey, Luke and Han are getting medals. Don't I get one?

Rebel Officer: Nah, you chickened out. You're lucky we don't throw you to the gundarks.

Wedge: D'oh!
