I don't see any reason to make Chewbacca CGI in the ST. He and the other Wookiees in ROTS weren't CGI (perhaps some in the far background were, I dunno) so if they're not lazy or cheap enough to avoid making an actual suit, we should expect to see a 'real' Chewie.

Why do people keep referencing the Expanded Universe stuff? It is not relevant at all. Only a select SW fanbase has knowledge of it. Disney has no reason to peddle it to the general SW audience. That said, Chewie should and will be in the new film.

 

Chewbacca really should (and probably will) be in the new films.

To keep the EU intact just say Chewbacca was cloned at 46ABY & everybody got used to it by 50ABY ( where EP7 takes place )

I have bets in Vegas that he WILL be back at least for 7. The current odds are 3,720 to one.

 

I think he will be in Episode VII. However, I still have the fear that Disney will start the ST after the Vong invasion etc, to avoid potential conflicts and rancor from EU fans. This would of course exclude Chewbacca. Naturally, I hope my fears are unfounded.

 

Don't fear. Disney has already stated that the ST will be "original." Including the Vong will not fit that description.

 

I would imagine they are going to just steamroll over the book material. It's going to be an original story, like Echo said. Thats more than likely going to breed a new EU of it's own.

The books are probably a total non factor for Arndt, Abrams and even Lucas at this point.
