If the internet was around during the OT there would have been a split back then as well. Fans wont ever be united but the question is will most fans like it? We will see after it comes out.

I think it will give away a lot about what will happen in the second & third movie.

Agreed. I took a lot of stick back in the day for liking Return of the Jedi... or as many called it Return of the Teddy... It certainly wasn't seen as a cool film in my social group (admittedly I was a but an infant)...

I think it will broadly please mainstream audiences and critics. I don't see it uniting the fanbase.

I think it depends on how a vast majority of the fans view the movie. Bad and good movies (from a fan's perspective) tend to unite the base. If the movie is awesome, again from a fan's perspective, it may have a truly unifying effect.

Upon the film's earthly arrival, "The Force Awakens" will secretly arm all factions of the fandom and through manipulation and cunning, maneuver one against the other, conducting a bloody, internecine conflict that escalates into the total annihilation of all parties, leaving a gaping void that allows for the emergence of the perfect fan to rise and break free of their dark shelter like shining, infant God-Kings and take possession as the true and only inheritors of "Star Wars".

Star Wars fans uniting under anything without a big disagreement? Hi LAR ious...You could ask every SW fan, "aren't lightsabers cool?" And ignite a civil war lol

Well now that Lucas just torpedoed whatever legitimacy the ST had left after the JJ Abrams as director/Lucas isn't in charge/Disney is decision, I would say no. The ST will now be as divisive as the PT ever was if not more. People might unite against the ST but I highly doubt it.

"Will The Force Awakens Unite Star Wars Fans?"

only the ones who want to be.

The ones who prefer to carve out their own weird little fiefdom will remain inclined to do so regardless the quality of the movie, because enjoying the movie is secondary to using the fandom as a form of substitute for self-importance.

Everyone else won't have time for all that mess.

Lol. My first cinematic experience with Star Wars was going to see ROTJ in Leicester Square when it came out. And I was mesmerised and loved it. Maybe older and wiser eyes have caused me to be overly critical of it? *shrug* :)

I only heard some adults complain about the Ewoks back in the day... though my parents loved them.

Something made me think of and go searching for this old thread...can't imagine why[face_thinking]:p

I'm going to go out on a limb here and answer the OP's question:

    "No."

The SW age of consensus ended with the prequels. The internet ended it. Makes it practically impossible.

Yeah, I also think that the internet/internet culture has had a lot to do with it...

Do you think it might be more unified in the future, FS? (and if so--why?)

It would be nice, but I'm highly skeptical of that myself...
