...well, and the women he's had sex with since being diagnosed four years ago.

Given he announced it on a daytime talk show, it's open for public comment.

Oh, if we should all be afforded such tolerance!

    I kid!

But he did it because he was being blackmailed, and those people were not taking money just from him, but from his kids. Apparently the cocaine was not.

I think Kyle's post on the previous page wins the internet.

It's unfortunate for him, but he lived a high risk lifestyle.

Sadly it isn't a huge surprise because of his lifestyle, but no one deserves HIV. I wish him the best.

Fortunately there have been so many advancements in treatments -- people can live for decades now.

Yeah, I know someone who's lived with HIV for 30 years now. He's married, perfectly healthy, his husband is HIV free... he's one of the lucky ones to have made it this far given the state of things in the 80s, but I know for sure that the more modern medications have also been a life-saver to him. It's really impressive how much progress medical science has made on this.

... of course, it doesn't matter much if they do find a cure, then charge such a high price for it that no one's insurance will even cover it. Which is unfortunately what's happened with Hep C.

Magic Johnson does not have HIV anymore. Well, he does but he doesn't. It's weird. (He said it was "asleep" in his system, whatever that means) Takes a decent combination of meds and lives a healthy lifestyle. Anything is possible, Charlie!

One of Sheen's exes, porn star Bree Olson, one of his "goddesses" when he had his freakout, was interviewed on the Stern show and she is HIV clear too but she was apparently very much perturbed by it.

In short, with the new medications and vaccines, it's possible to have HIV and have it be "dormant" or "sleeping". However, those people should still be aware that it is possible to still transmit HIV. It is just far less likely.

In longer terms, it has to do with the viral load. This is basically the amount of HIV particles you have in your blood per millilitre. The less HIV particles you have in your blood, the less chance of being affected or having other people become infected. In some people, they have a very low number. Even undetectable. Especially so with medications and with proper management. This makes it very unlikely to transmit HIV. However, it's still possible and viral load can change quickly when treatment is not effective for the individual. So it is not a cure, but a treatment that greatly increases life expectancy and the safety level of any partners. It's just not perfect, and anyone can still transmit HIV even if they have undetectable viral load.

Yes. In the case of Hep C, there's a cure which you may have seen advertised because they've sure been doing a lot of it. Unfortunately, no insurance (even the top tier PPO I have) will pay for it until you already have severe liver damage. Otherwise, it's $100,000, so good luck with that.

Pharmaceutical companies truly need to be reigned in by government regulation, at least when it comes to life-saving medication.

I think it's really brave of Charlie Sheen to finally decide to tell us about his condition. I really hope he gets the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage next year.

I suppose this means his angry meltdown a few years ago was due to him finding out he was positive.

Yeah...it's hard to feel bad when he used to brag to anyone who was listening about his sex and drug habits.

The best I can come up with is "Sorry you got yourself infected. Dumbass."

Actually with that vid I do feel sorry for him because he is obviously a horrid addict and needed help. Addiction diminishes choice. That's why it's called addiction.
