With George saying EP3 will be the darkest of the saga...

How would you rate the films so far in terms of darkness? My take, in order from most dark to least dark:

Empire Strikes Back
Attack of the Clones
Return of the Jedi
A New Hope
The Phantom Menace

I've taken not only story into consideration, but the overall tone of the film.

I don't really think ESB was that dark...

I'd say:

Come ON! Luke vs. Vader in front of the EMPORER! That MUSIC whne Luke finally BREAKS BAD! That's like, "turning off the sun" dark.

 

Yeah but the lighthearted muppet movie Ewok segments and the heart warming buddy flick rescuing Han from Jabba sequence and the fun action adventure space battle sequence all contribute to the tone of the film. ROTJ is one of the most lighthearted of the Star Wars films for this reason. Sure the Emperor stuff is dark, but it cannot overpower the other slapstick kiddy elements of this disjointed and all-over-the-map movie.
