Some woolly mammoth stuff I'd like to share:

The last woolly mammoths may have died out 3600 years ago

Whenever my roommate's grandchildren are over and the Ice Age movies are on TV, I tell them mammoths lived in our area in prehistoric times, because my high school chemistry teacher was involved in a dig with woolly mammoth remains in a nearby town in the county, which he talked about in class one day. Living in Michigan, I can believe mammoths lived here during the last Ice Age, because of all the landscape that was shaped by the glaciers, like the lake near my house.

So many people in different fields really do need to take Malcom's advice about "could vs. should". Not too long ago, the accepted wisdom was that capability didn't always necessitate activity. That concept's even found in Scripture: "even though I can (i.e., "am able to") do anything, I must not be a slave to anything."

I don't see the problem, mammoths are herbivores. They can't eat the tourists.

I think that as far as paving the way to "bring back" more recently extinct species (see: the ones that are definitely our fault), it's valuable, but I'd rather not waste our time with prehistoric animals who are not suited for our modern climate and would always require human care no matter what. Why wooly mammoths? Because it's kewl? Don't we keep enough wild animals captive already? Mammoths are pretty similar to modern elephants, right? And we know how well they do in captivity (they don't). At least, say, the Tasmanian Tiger still theoretically has a niche to occupy in the wild.

I think you guys are missing the point here.

    Chugnuts.

Have you seen how much pewp an elephant produces? Add long matted fur into the equation and we're talking dingleberries the size of footballs. At least. Imagine one of those things rattling its dags as it runs along.

    Awesome.

Actually if you introduced them to Alaska and Canada and maybe a few northern states there wouldn't be much of an issue. Its just they have to be introduced to the far off places tourists are not and no one goes to so for their survival we would have to let them be. No one would really see them in the wild after they are introduced. You could possibly have them in Yellowstone but its difficult.

Not until they had larger numbers to make it worthwhile. Ironically it could help polar bears and grizzlies as well giving them another prey species.

I know bears are known for their swordsmanship, but how the holy **** is a bear going to take down a mammoth?
