In a week (May 31), the World Championship Soccer will start. Though Holland hasn't qualified for the first time in 16 years (they were busy signing multimillion dollar deals and snarling to the press), I'm following the whole tournament anyway, as ever.

I've got beer, I've got crisps, and I've got the feeling England may reach the final. They've played well during qualifications, very solid. I'm expecting some things from France and Spain as well.

    Here's the match schedule:

They can hardly do worse then in 98 when they scored one goal.

Actually, I'm very optimistic..(continued fanboy ranting)

I'm probably one of the few Americans who will be greatly interested. Soccer is one of my favorite sports.

    ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite a torrent of midfield injuries, I still hope the boys will progress well.

In '98 the US were ranked 32/32...so at least they can;t do worse [face_devil]

I believe last time US played England, the US lost, and the England manager found himself jobless...

If they were to play now, I'd have money on Michael Owen geting at least a couple in a crushing defeat by England.

Well, Venezuela never makes it onto the Cup (though we did have a good showing in the qualifying round this time), so I always root for Brazil and Colombia, our neighbors. Brazil was pretty mediocre in the qualifiers, but the same was true in 1994 and 1998, and they won the Cup in '94, and finished second in '98. I have high hopes for them. I'm hoping for revenge for 1998's defeat at the hands of France.

France will win it again. Zidane will have a tournament for the ages.

Argentina will be a dominant factor.

Spain always chokes. Italy plays the worst soccer in the world, you're supposed to try to score.

    Brazil will be decent.

The US will make the 2nd round as the #2 out of their group.

The US could surprise a lot of people. Few people have noticed how strong they've been since the France fiasco. They're not gonna win the cup, but they could get farther than most give them credit for.

I have a gut feeling that tells me England is gonna take the Cup this time.

The same thing happened back in France 98...I had a feeling France would win and they did :D

You know I really wish the US would do well, but I just don't think it's gonna happen.

I can always root for the women though. :p

I hope you're right, wan. And the team will be even stronger in 2006, because alot of them will be hitting their peak.

*gets ready to watch England's final warm-up game against Cameroon*

*waits for the inevitable Owen goal*

Personally, I'm going for Poland, who hasn't been there since 86. What can I say, except that's where my family is from!

Hey, they used to be good. They may just surprise you.

I dont know much about soccer other than playing it but shouldnt Korea and Japan be good contenders for the cup if they're hosting it? I'm sure they practiced alot to ensure that they don't embarass themselves at home..

I believe Denmark has a very good chance this year. And I don't just say that because I'm Danish, but the football team we have today is just as good, if not better, than the one we had in '98.

    Whats all this "Soccer" rubbish?

You kick the BALL with your FOOT, hence it is called FOOTBALL :p

England are going to have troubles, especially with our weakened midfield...

I think France have got it in the bag, I saw them destroy Scotland the other week, and I though I would love it if we won, England will probably lose to them in the second round.

There is only one true football, and that is the AFL. If you don't know what it is, you don't deserve to know.

Making it to the second round will make it a successful WC for the US. If Clint Mathis can break out, I think Team USA will do well. But Sports Illustrated jinxed him by putting him on the cover last week. :p Same with the Italians - SI picked them to win, so I have to say it's looking like France again.
