Amph WORLD WAR HULK (Planet Hulk Spoilers - WWH Spoilers HTR)

This story looks to be better than "Civil War". I also like that Peter David got to do the setup, before Pak returns. A nice way to set things up and really get into Hulk's head.

 

I think that I prefer the story to the Civil War story, but the art... uhg. I'll buy it, but I'm going to gripe and moan every issue.

I'm reading the Prologue right now.

Remember kids, "Blagbult" in the brood language means "she who urinates uncontrollably."

 

Gotta love Peter David.

 

Peter David is one of those few authors that can put humor into their books without making the book any less serious. Jim Butcher is another such author. In of itself, a comic aside does not in any way, shape or form detract from the seriousness of a story. Take Hamlet for example - in my opinion, that's by far the funniest of Shakespears plays. In particular, the scene where Hamlet explains that Polonius is at supper is brilliant black comedy.

Comic asides are good, and Peter David is fantastic at them.

 

So far so good. David's prologue's fantastic. Gotta say that Amadeus Cho kid is wearing on me already though.

 

John Romita Jr. draws a great Spider-Man though. His work on both Peter Parker SM and ASM was great in my book.

His Spider-Man is one of the few I like. However, his Mary Jane is bad, and too often around his Spider-Man.

Issue #1 is out. Quite good, though I get the feeling Black Bolt was playing possum. I don't think he was a supporter of the plan in the first place. If Hulk took out the most powerful Illuminati completely offscreen I'm very disappointed.

 

I actually enjoyed WWH #1 more than I expected. I never really cared for JRJR, but this doesn't look bad. The story kept me interested in a kind of Hulk smash-ey sort of way.

 

And really, when you buy a book called "World War Hulk" you shouldn't be expecting "Watchmen" level high intelligence stuff. You should want to see Hulk smash. And from what I could tell in store, it delivered that.

 

The writing was fine, for the most part. Seeing Spider-Man and co. jump in and help is characteristic in one sense - they're heroes, doing their part. In another sense, it was annoying that they'd stop worrying about the entire civil war thing so fast. It wasn't even a retcon, it was a complete disregard for the past year worth of stories.

But Iron Man vs. Hulk was cool, even if it could have been better drawn.

 

Frontline continues being horrible.

I mean not evacuating Harlem? C'mon Jenkins.

 

It makes sense that Iron Man and the New Avengers would call a truce, since the Hulk is a far greater threat and you'd need every able bodied hero to fight him. Note that Tony will forgive if they all stop the Hulk. It's obvious that won't happen.

 

How long till we don't have to see the image of Hulk holding black bolt in every single tie in.

This latest issue is a great example of why I dislike JRJR. I don't see how someone can look at Planet Hulk, look at World War Hulk, and not be annoyed at the drop in quality of art.

 

I just picked up a few WWH related comics today:

World War Hulk #2

I like what I'm reading so far. I need to try and track down the prologue and the first set of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk comics for WWH. One thing that puzzles me though:

I'm reading the X-Men tie in and since when does Professor X walk?

 

It was two years ago so I'm not going to bother with blackout text. Prof. X has walked since X-Men: Deadly Genesis. When he lost his powers in House of M, Scarlett Witch also apparently gave him the use of his legs back. But he regained his powers in Uncanny X-Men when he was inside the M'krann crystal and is walkin' and telepathin' all over the place.

 

Got myself all caught up, and I must say: I really liked the Ghost Rider tie-in issues (#12-13)... Plus, I haven't been too much a fan of Iron Man lately and I'm anxious to see what happens to him. Again, he comes up with a ridiculous over-the-top plan to end the crisis (in Iron Man #20) by annihilating Manhattan and every civilian and superhero in it through the Negative Zone.


By the way, I've seen some conflicting timelines around, and from reading all the tie-ins so far, here's what I've come up with:
