CT Worst Lines in the CT

We all know that the prequel trilogy is filled with horrible dialogue. However, the original trilogy isn't without its share of clunkers.

Here are mine from each one:

ANH

"I can't see a thing in this helmet."
"Will someone get this big walking carpet out of my way?"
"I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board."

TESB

"I don't know where you get your delusions, laser-brain."
"Why you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy looking nerf herder!"
"After all, he's only a Wookiee!"

ROTJ

"Someone who loves you."
"Hey, it's me."
"Hold me."

What are some other ones?

 

Nostalgia prevents me from answering objectively.

 

"But I was going to the tosche station to get some power converters."

To be honest most the lines in CT are'nt bad for me. Even one's like this one are not really too annoying.

 

I have a bad feeling about this is one of the only lines OT that bothers me. There is no need for every film to use it. PT has much more dialogue I find infeasible than OT.

 

The dialogue is one of many things I love about SW

I see no true difference in style or "quality" of dialogue in either trilogy. It fits the operatic/50's serial style George is going for

 

I agree that the CT has some clunkers, but these aren't them. The first is a practical statement, and I always thought the second showed some fun, acerbic wit on Leia's part!

 

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but my least favorite is Han's "I know".

I hate to sound like a fanboy, but I can't imagine any lines being gone. They're all part of the magic.

 

Since I've never been shy about criticizing the PT's dialogue, in the interest of equal treatment I think I should make an effort to cite the worst lines of the OT.

ANH

"Oh, it's Han." - it's so soapy and Hamill delivers it with the skill of Joey Tribbiani.
"Yeehoo!"

ESB

"Luke, I have no approach vector, I'm not set." - it just sounds like gibberish.
"Attack pattern delta." - More meaningless words.

"You fixed us all pretty good, didn't you? My friend."

"That's not true! That's impossible!"
"Nooooooooooooo."
"Father."

"I'm standing here in pieces, and you're having delusions of grandeur."

ROTJ

"I'm out of it for a little while and everybody gets delusions of grandeur." - I just hate the delusions of grandeur line.

"So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view."

"What is it?"
"Ask me again sometime."

"I know. Somehow...I've always known."
"But why must you confront him?"

"I..I can't tell you."
"Hold me."


That's it, I actually went through the scripts and that's all I could find.

 

I'm in the same boat as you.

No noticeably bad lines for me, but a few that don't have the best delivery

 

On paper, there's nothing as horrendous as some of the furballs the PT coughed up, but the dialogue between Han and Lando in ROTJ where Han lends the Falcon to Lando is just cringeworthy. Poorly written, poorly delivered - just rotten. Possibly the worst scene of the OT, SE nonsense aside.

I've got too much sentimental attachment to Luke's infamous 'power converters' line to trash it completely. It'd be like wailing on Plan 9 From Outer Space for bad writing and directorial incompetence - that's exactly why we love it!

 

ROTJ

I don't like the , "but I know you are powerful, mighty Jabba, and your anger at Solo is equally powerful". either
or "greetings exalted one" I really hate that one.

Some of Palpatine's dialogue. "Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey to the darkside will be complete" That is dumb.
"Give in to your anger."

"We have powerful friends"

ESB
Luke's "No that's not true that's impossible" "No No" It's more of the way it sounds and facial expressions than the actual lines.
Yoda's thing about anger and darkside.

I have a suspicion that were any less an actor than Alec Guinness given some of Obi-Wan's lines they would come across considerably sillier - most of his dialogue with Vader in their duel benefitted a lot from having his gravitas behind it. But as for the stuff that didn't really work at all... I really don't like any of that stuff leading up to Ob-Wan cutting someone's arm off. It just doesn't do it for me at all, either Luke or the other dude's lines.

 

Oh I had forgotten the

"You can't win Darth"
"The circle is now complete, when I left you I was but the learner now I am the master"

 

I've seen "Boy, it's lucky you had these compartments" cited as a notable example.

 

I love most of the lines (even if they are cheesy, or perhaps because they are cheesy). However Luke's "Nooo!" in ESB bothers me, mostly because for whatever reason it reminds me of Disney's Captain Hook.

 

IDK if this counts but I can't hear/see the "we have stolen a small imperial shuttle" and "fly casually" lines without thinking of Family Guy.

i think that's subjective as well. most of us are just so used to hearing these lines they're ingrained in us. if you were to dissect them most would be found quite silly. these films were never meant to be too serious anyway, that's part of the charm they have.
