Would have making Anakin a "Master" stopped him from joining the Dark Side?

The council could not make Anakin a master in this situation. The novel states it, since Anakin is Palpatines representative, making Anakin a master would have been equal to Palpatine having a direct voice in jedi affairs. Palpatine knew how it would go down, and it would just make Anakin side with him more.

Nope. Anakin's greed and attachment is what led him to the Darkside.

I don't think there was anything he could do to get around that.

This certainly is an interesting question. I tend to think Anakin would still have somehow ended up with the assignment to spy on the chancellor and the eventual outcome would occur.

The entire basis for Anakin's turn was his dreams. Never mind his mistrust in the Jedi, never mind his friendship with Palpatine (remember he was about to kill him, but he needed him for Padmé's sake), forget everything else. Sure, those things don't help ... but it all comes down to his dreams. Once he had those nightmares, it was over.

Interesting that his perception of his dreams determined his reality. Maybe it was simply a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ever since he had a dream about his Mom dying ... he fears the future because he knows his dreams do come true.

    Love really did blind him.

The way Lucas described Luke's vision on Dagohbah, in the tree cave, I tend to think that's what happened to Anakin. That his deep-seated fear of losing his loved ones, now that he was so happy, caused him to have his vision of Padme dying. And the more he feared, the clearer the vision became.

That or it was the Force warning Anakin that if he continued down the path he was heading, he would lose everything that mattered the most to him.

To say the council was to blame is like saying that, if you make a person mad, you are responcible for their own actions. Anakin was corrupted because of his flaws. Things may have contributed, but ultimately he chose.

I don't think it could have stopped Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, but it might have delayed it a tad bit. Anakin didn't trust the Jedi Council, if not the entire Order, when they didn't make him a master. Had they given him the title and all the priveliges and responsibilities that came with it, it might have made him feel more important, and think that the Jedi respected or trusted him.

OTOH, the reason he was put on the Council in the first place was because Palpy wanted him there. Had Anakin been made a master on the Council, Palpy could have said that he wouldn't be there if it where not for Palpatine nominating him.

Anakin was set up from birth to become a sith it was ineveitable. Pay close attention to the talk Palpatine has with Anakin about the jedi plot and the former wise sith who was killed by his apprentice (Palpatine himself) who had learned to create life out of metachlorines. This is how Anakin was concieved his mothers whom. Here he was out of reach of the Jedi order until Qui Gon stumbled upon him. Anakin was made from the Dark Side of the force and his personality breaths it. Hes arrogant, power hungry, full of fear and unable to let go. Obi-One truly trained him well but the the lies and corruption of Palpatine had been fed to him since he was young clouded his mind, Palpatine was as important a figure as Obi-One was to Anakin (father like). Making him a master would have done nothing but drive his arrogance futher along.

YES if anakin was granted the rank of master then thinks would have been different

but NO the jedi had to deny it to him , and none other then Mace

    goddamtit

The way he delivers the line is so cokcy and cold , very cold i have claimed this to be the coldest line in the history of cinema and i think he deserves a medal for it

If you have the new book on Vader, you see it does suggest he was created by Darth Plageus. Anakin was the 'chosen one' but he was the ONE chosen by the Sith and not the Jedi. Yoda eluded to it when, on his way to Kashyyk, he said that the prophecy was perhaps misread! The more you examine the events, the more you see that Darth Sidious chose him since he was a child on Naboo. He let the Jedi train him in the ways of the force while he developed the 'fatherly' image that Anakin needed. Had the Jedi played a more 'fatherly' role, and not let Palpatine interfere and manipulate the situation, then perhaps it would have turned out differently.. but 'the dark side clouded everything'.. Sidious was under their nose so close their sensing of his dark deeds with Anakin went un noticed.. 'arrogant were the older Jedi' and notice that Sidious used that phrase as Yoda lay on his chamber floor after being blown away by the lightning. So many little things tie it all together.. GL the master [face_dancing]

I agree, this makes perfect sense.
