In ROTS, Palpatine is telling Annikan all about the powers of the darkside. During the process he tells Annikan a story about an All-Powerful Sith Lord that had more power than anyone ever before and even knew the secret to reverse death. Well, since palpatine cowardly killed his master in his sleep and wasnt even close to being as powerful as his so called master. Didnt the darkside actually lose strength by palpatine taking over. I would love to see another prequel to the current prequel to see the upbringing of the Jedis, and all the so called great powerful Sith Lords that we only hear about and never see.

Also, Did Palpatine even know how to cheat death like he told Annikan that he would teach him? Because his words about his master was something like "Isnt it strange how someone who had the power to stop others from dying, couldnt even stop themselves from dying". Well, call it karma, but if Palpatine had this secret power then how come he didnt even see his own apprentice turning around and throwing him off an edge? haha. Also, Annikan got mad at the Jedi for holding back his progress, how come he never got mad at the sith for not teaching him what he turned for?

He did get mad at the Sith but was kept well in his place.

As for the rest it is all unknown, save to say that Sidious had no such power himself.

This kinda relates to the topic above it, if Sidious was the worst thing to happen to the sith.

Palpataine describes Plageuis as a seasoned master of the darkside, with powers unknown to anyone else. He may not have been the manipulator Sidious was, but on screen we never saw anything over the top spectacular about Sidious. He's old, feeble and crazed. If Plageuis killed Sidious after his attempted treachery, Darth Vader could've been the most powerful Sith ever.

Do we even know for a fact that Darth Plagueis had the ability to cheat death? All we have is Palpatine's word for it...

Interesting question, TC. I'm going to lean toward no, the darkside wouldn't have been more powerful.

Anakin was the chosen one, according to Jedi prophecy, he was to bring balance to the force.

Which he and Sidious accomplished with Order 66 and the destruction of all Jedi, save Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Yes, in time, their plan backfired what with Vader offing Sidious and then dying himself.

However, there was a period when the Sith gained what they had sought all those millenia,
    dominion of the galaxy.

If Sidious had never killed Darth Plageuis, according to the rule of two, he would never been able to accept Vader as his apprentice.

It's kind of like circular logic.

If you go back in time and kill your father before you born how can you be born in the first place, in order to go back in time...etc. ad nauseum.

    That's just my two cents...

Plagueis kind of sounds like he was obsessed with unlocking the key to immortality. Sidious, is never really shown to have this kind of ambition. He was more focused on manipulating politics to regain control of the galaxy for the Sith.

So, I think it comes down to what you mean by the darkside being more powerful...

If you mean that Plagueis could have achieved access to knew powers for the Sith to utilize, then maybe.

But if you mean that Plagueis would be in a position to carry out his revenge on the Jedi and take control of the universe, then no I don't think so. Plagueis wanted greater power over the force, while for Sidious, the desire for such power seemed to take a back seat to political power. Sidious killed Plagueis when he thought that he had no more to learn, and when it turned out that Sidious did not have Plagueis' power, he needs Anakin's help to achieve it. Sidious has the power to manipulate others to give him what he is unable to get on his own, and in that regard I'd say Sidious was one of the best things to happen to the Sith.

I don't think Palpatine's master was all that poweful, I think what Palpatine said to Anakin about his master was a lie just to turn Anakin to the dark side.

Plagueis wasn't powerful enough to detect that Sidious was going to kill him and went to sleep, only to never wake up again. He also wasn't aware(or didn't seem to be anyways) that Sidious was training Maul on the side before he bit the dust.

Never once in the movie that it says Plagueis was Sidious' Master.

Without reading the books, the movie goer would just know that Plagueis is just a SITH LEGEND.

Nor does it say that he created Anakin.

Going just on the movies we don't even know that the story that Sidious told Anakin was true. If it was, though, and if Sidious did kill Plagueis without learning his secret, then there's a good chance that the dark side did lose some power with the loss of Plagueis.

The only power that Plagueis seemed to possess that other Sith didn't was the power to keep others from dying. He couldn't even survive his own death he could just keep others from passing on. From Sidious's P.O.V I doubt that the loss of this power was viewed as a loss as Sidious cared not at all for others. His obsession was an all-consuming need to control, first through political and emotional manipulation and later through sheer brute force. If he felt any regret at all for the loss of that ability it extended only as far as he control of Anakin. Had Sidious learned this power he personally would have kept Padme alive, using her as a chain with which to choke Anakin the rest of his natural life.

If Padme was saved by Sidious, Vader would have betrayed Sidious and would have tried to convince Padme to join him in ruling the galaxy. Padme needed to die for Sidious to have control over Anakin; Anakin had nobody else to turn to except Sidious, whom he otherwise hated.

True(it was never said in the films), but the way that he says he recites the story can lead some some to think that he was. It's up to the audience to decide.

    That's Plagueis in the background.

According to Dark Lord and Death Star, he did not discover a way to "cheat death" or "preserve the immortal ego".

No, Sidious is smarter than that. If he had Plagueis's powers he would have never taught that power to Vader. He would have saved Padme but he would have made it clear that he was her life support system. If he died then she too would die. He would have used the tease of power to keep Vader at bay and Vader like a moron would chomp at the bit jumping every time Sidious said jump. In many ways I can't help but think that things would have turned out very different for Vader had this happened.

It's another example of the fatal flaw in the Sith way. The fact that the whole thing is fuelled by selfishness, deceit and deception is at odds with the need to pass on new learning to enable the order to continue and grow. I guess achieving immortality would eliminate that problem for the Sith, as whoever achieved it could do away with the apprentices and rule solo for ever.

Plageus sounded more like a scientific type Sith, so the Sith holocrons would have contained more knowledge. But that wouldnt have made much immediate difference to the Sith goal of revenge on the Jedi.

As for the power of the dark side, I feel that remains forever constant, like gravity (in our galaxy, not the GFFA :p ). Its all in how you use that power.

From the little that we know about Plagueis, it would seem to me that he was more of an old fashioned Sith Lord intent on making the most of his power and unlocking secrets to the dark side. It seems he had a high interest in finding a way to eternal life and preventing death for not only himself, but for others as well. How successful was he at these ambitions? We don't know yet. But based on Palpatine not having these talents himself it seems that he probably never really never discovered these things. It's like Qui-Gon says in the script to Yoda about the Sith never finding the path to everlasting presence through the Force... they do not love.

Palpatine seems to have disagreed with Plagueis' ways and was more interested in controlling others and finishing what was set in motion by Darth Bane... domination of the galaxy and revenge on the Jedi. That may be part of why he killed Plagueis in his sleep. Plus he probably knew he didn't have a chance against him in a fair fight.

Remember Plaguis was Plaguis the wise... I just decided that he was reincarnated into Anakin Skywalker. Plaguis DID overcome death, but not in a way that Sideous would understand, but in a way that would be guaranteed to bring the kind of balance to the force that would get the Sith revenge and in power. The dark side had its hayday BECAUSE Sideous killed his master.

The thing is, the only info we have of Plageius is what Palps told anakin, and we all know that palpatine is somewhat of a liar when it comes to these things.

Exactly. The eventual goal of the Sith was to have their revenge on the Jedi and rule the galaxy. Sidious was the only one to bring this plan to fruition, admittedly bringing about his (and the Sith's) downfall.
