I applied for a position within the Government in December and was hearing good things from them up until March when I heard no more. I did call them only to not have my call returned. So I stayed with my current job and was held up in May and quit.

I then applied to the place I'm working at now, where I had the best. interview. ever. I also get picked up on my way to work and love everyone I work with. There is also much slacking (but w/o internet access, unfortunately).

Also, this job is mainly for the summer, so I will likely be laid off around Sept-Oct. But, the guy who hired me, John, has been talking to the guy who referred me, Wayne, saying he's trying to find me a Full-Time position.

So, this morning, wake up at 8am, to Pat from the Government, "Hi, we're are hiring and see you are qualified for such and such a position, can you start July 18th?"

It's full time, Mon-Fri, but contracted til mid-Sept, with likelihood of being recontracted again after that. (The Gov't does that here. They contract so they can weed out those they don't like, and eventually those they do like, stay on for ever....)

So, I'm sure you can appreciate my dilemna. Currently, I make a little over 10 bucks an hour; with the gov't 17-18. BUT I have to take a couple buses (so cha-ching more expensive bus pass, unless I can vanpool)......

HELP, please. I need to let her know today. I'm gonna call John and tell him my situation, but I really need people's input, here. :( Thanks.

I'd take the new job, April. It pays more (nearly twice as much!), it's a little investment, and maybe it leads to new things.

Though I don't feel I can just make a couple of casual remarks about it here and now.

It might be that my thinking is a little messed-up anyway, as I'm hearing Kylie Minogue on the radio again.

I'm leaning to what you're saying.... Neither job is concrete, but this one pays more, so I can save up "just in case" a lot easier with this position.... It's just the current job is so convenient!

    I know.

But still, if the other one pays more, you'll find it to be more rewarding in the end. Look:

More money --> bigger house close to new work --> happy April --> happy Casper

But really, you should decide for yourself, April. I would do it.

I mean, the salary's going up. You're young, you need that. And you'll be in a new environment, who knows what comes up? It may be the chance of a lifetime.

I know, I really do feel the same.

It's just all unfortunate. Lots of people wait a long time to find a great job and here I am deciding between two. :p

But it only sucks at the start.

Once you're a bit settled there, it'll be just as nice as the job you're having now. It's a phase, nothing more.

Yeah... I just talked to John, he basically said it was a no-brainer and that he was sad to hear I was leaving, but he'd do the same if he were me. :) So that's about it, then. :)

It felt like quite a bit more of an emergency then it really is. John was understanding on the phone and I just talked to the lady at the Gov't and I start on the 18th. :)

I used to think that happiness hadn't been

I was afraid that maybe you thought you

    That round about me
    You wanted to stay

Actually it's a good thing I didn't see this thread in time as I would've encouraged the exact opposite.

I wouldn't trade somewhere where I was very happy working to somewhere where I wasn't happy, but with better pay. Do you really value money that much? Or do you value your health and wellbeing more?

In any case, good luck with the new job!

i think i would have agreed with you Kerryn if her current job was more of a sure thing. since neither job offers a promise of long-term stability, i think she has to go with the opportunity to make more money, since that will mean hopefully that she is able to save money in case her contract isn't renewed. but yeah, if she wasn't likely going to be laid off in sept./oct. then i would lean towards staying in the good situation that she's in now.

Well, I've only been at my current job for 2.5 weeks, so I haven't invested a lot of time in that job. PLUS, both jobs will potentially end at the same time, so why not make more to save "just in case"?

    :)
    Edit--It's Federal
