Not cheap though - as Watto pointed out, buying a new ship would have been cheaper. He also claimed he was the only one around who had one (possibly the only one on the planet).

But the money from the Boonta Race win was enough for the value of the hyperdrive, and then some.

I mean yes it is very expensive, because it should be rare in the outer rim. Or because of Watto. Because he wants money. Also, how much can we trust Watto that only he has it. I mean he's a dealer, and he tries to get Qui-Gon buying from him, not others, right. Also, even Watto is honest, it doesn't mean that there's no other Hyperdrive unit on the planet. Because it's more like the unit that is capable to your ship can only be found here

Excellent approach. The Naboo ship was twice the length of Falcon. That should allow scaling down to the naive required size of hyperdrive for an X-Wing. A ratio of 76 meters (greatest dimension of ship) to ~2 meters (greatest dimension of hyperdrive) gives 38:1. So the 35 meter Falcon has a hyperdirve with greatest dimension of 35/38 = ~0.92 meters, and the 12.5 meter X-Wing has a greatest dimension of hyperdrive of 12.5/38 = ~0.33 meters. Makes a backup hyperdrive on the Falcon a little harder to dismiss.

By similar methods one could make some guestimates of the expense of the respective hyperdrives. IIRC TPM does not address the availability of hyperdrives for smaller ships, for, in such a consideration they could have simply tried to get passage on a smaller ship. But transport off the planet, by any means, was not the chief priority, especially after Qui-Gon felt a vergence in the Force.

This line of questioning makes me very interested to hear more about the origins of the Incom X-Wing. Was it designed from the ground up to have a hyperdrive? Was it originally designed for the Empire in a hyperdrive configuration? Maybe Imperial procurement officers who had been given their strategic mission and their annual budget, which invariably translates to their unfunded mandate, had evaluated the Incom X-Wing with as impartial an eye as they had to evaluate this other competitor TIE (Seinar?). They stacked up the numbers, and said, 'Well, we cannot be spending this much money per unit. Even if it's a better ship, we have to go with this contractor over here.' And that quickly, the Incom X-Wing was out of that major buyer. And that quickly, the Empire moved on and did not do further business with Incom.

Is there a reason that the Y-Wing, despite being from a different manufacturer, looks like or has the same aesthetic as the X-Wing? It looks like it could have come from the same manufacturer.
