Sorry. Brain fart. I was thinking of the Jedi fighter from Episode 3, not the interceptor.

I was referring to the TIE interceptor from the OT.

We will have to agree to disagree on the Jedi fighter for Ep 3. Especially seeing as the design for Ep 2 was so much more elegant.

While I wouldn't want classic TIE fighters - I would like to see the TIE ball cockpit on a new starfighter.

Well, there is the existing thread TIE Fighters in the ST. I am okay with some deviations in topic, as most discussions about starfighter capabilities/technology relate to X-Wings in some way, even if only through comparison. If a rabbit trail goes too far, I try to rein it back in to the original topic (see the Y-Wing discussion).

My original intention of starting this topic was to discuss starfighters, specifically X-Wings, with the main goal to leave out discussing the Millennium Falcon because it deserves its own thread. I'd be okay with the mods changing the title to "Starfighters of the ST," but then the poll seems oddly specific focusing on X-Wings.

I believe Doug Chiang did Maul's ship. He also worked on the current film, so we may see a nifty updated TIE.

TIE Fighters land on their wings. As for aerodynamics, not important since they have repulsors...this is Star Wars not real life.

Hear, hear! It is interesting to discuss Star Wars technologies as if they were real, but at the end of the day, (IMO) what makes Star Wars more fun than Star Trek is the willing suspension of disbelief afforded by not trying to make everything scientifically possible/explainable, but just immersing yourself in a new universe and enjoying the story. :)

(At the same time, being able to discuss design elements of Star Wars technology, possible or not, is part of the fun!)

I love that Star Wars tech explanations don't delve into the details. Just say repulsor lift and move on to more important stuff! ;)

So you don't want a scene where Threepio avidly explains the intricate functionality of Alluvial Dampers then?

But I do want an in depth lecture on the programing of binary load lifters. Fascinating stuff.

X-wing series books points out that the TIEs do poorly in an atmosphere due to this. I think there was even an occasion where a TIE pilot managed to snap off his own panel by trying to make a flat turn at speed.

I imagine it's more likely that they simply hover stationary on repulsorlifts when forced to allow the pilot egress on a planetary surface (ie, somewhere unequipped to dock TIE Fighters, aka everywhere that's not Imperial - which let's face it, the Empire would prefer. They don't want no damned dirty Rebels using their tech if they can avoid it!)

Plus, to be honest? Landing on those spindly panels just looks silly....

It's been done in the EU and video games for what's worth...

Besides, the point of landing means you need it locked down etc and save fuel because you are leaving you ship...can't have it hovering forever.

It being in the games doesn't make it any less silly looking! And you also just proved my point: The Imperials would *want* it to be as difficult for Rebels or other parties to utilise TIE Fighters as possible, so would not give them the ability to land properly without a specialised docking infrastructure - hence hovering briefly only for entry/egress. I imagine it cut the production costs down too, which stands to reason since TIEs were supposed to be cheap to manufacture IIRC :)

Oh no...it looks silly...better not be a function then because it looks funny...

I doubt the empire was worried about how it looked when it built in that function.

I don't think they could even hover briefly (aka no repulsorlift), as they were mechanically launched into space and the end of the landing sequence was normally controlled by tractor beam. From Wookieepedia's Star Destroyer article:

Though TIE fighters are stationed at planetary bases in the EU, I'm pretty sure we never see that in the films. It is safe to assume the ones shown flying in-atmosphere at Bespin were launched from Death Squadron Star Destroyer(s). TIEs were certainly designed for space flight, and based on (current) canon alone it is possible they can only take off/land from Imperial ships fitted with the proper equipment.

I never suggested that looks were the Empire's motivation, merely that it looks silly from a real life standpoint. As others in the thread have alluded to, Star Wars tech is primarily there to "look cool" (and IMO, landing on the edges of flimsy looking solar panels looks decidedly uncool). Really don't think your sarc was warranted, thanks.

@Dak It of course doesn't preclude planetary Imperial stations having some sort of TIE infrastructure, and I would love to have seen a McQuarrie atmo TIE...

I haven't watched the vast majority of TCW, and can't imagine I ever will be. As such, I've never seen the Umbaran craft "land" and can't realistically comment on it -- although I will say that those wing affairs look somehow sturdier than the bog-standard TIE... still not a fan though!
