This was a brilliant film, I was hooked in my seat on the cinema every minute. I even got the game for XBOX 360. I loved watching Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow's epic battle at the end of the film. I cannot wait until the sequel to the film, 5/5.

I was let down by this film. I thought it was going to be more exciting but it was the same formulaic direction with average human characters. I guess it was designed to make money.

Is it just me or would Micheal Bay have made a much better G.I. Joe director? He?s certainly got much more of a military ?gun ?n? ammo? personality than Sommers. As a matter of fact I think he was born to direct a G.I. Joe movie! I can't think of anyone more suited to this frachise!

Wow! Sounds just like my views on the PT!

Michael Bay already got to descecrate Transformers twice. No need to give him any more.
I'd rather see John McTeirnan in charge af a new GIJoe movie (we pretend RoC never happened).
Let him work with Larry Hanna to come up with a script.
    Let him recast.
Keep Hasbro from having any influence whatsoever aside from letting them know what toys to produce and what look to give them.
Making a good movie should be the first priority.
If they do that, all the greed and marketing will be sated by the cash cow.

No, he was brought in near the end of the production to make fans think he was involved/cared/had some influence.
they drove a dump-truck full of money up to his house. He's not made of stone!

Before I give my comments on ROC, let me just say that I am a huge fan of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comics and toys from 1980's. I grew up with these characters, and in the past several years have gone back and revisited them via the 25th anniversary Hasbro toys & the recent reprints of the Marvel comics. I think the characterizations, storylines, vehicles, etc. are amazing & iconic.

And, when I first heard about the film and how they were going to change so many things, I told myself I would never, ever see this (this feeling was reinforced when I first saw the ROC toys on shelves last summer, and they bore little resemblance to the characters I was familiar with).

However, last week I saw G.I. Joe: ROC on DVD, for the very first time ever. I was extremely reluctant to see this, but a friend (who knows I'm a big movie fan) talked me into borrowing the DVD and watching the film. And, yes, I did see the entire film (even though I felt like turning it off ten minutes in) - to give constructive criticism on a film, I think it's important to watch it in it's entirety, since it's really unfair for someone to slam something that they have never seen.

After seeing the film, I found it extremely disspointing, from every aspect:

    - First of all, having the G.I. Joe team be international instead of American was a bad, bad idea, and renders the whole A Real American Hero aspect of the original team completely pointless - ridiculous.

    - I didn't like how the uniforms (on both sides) were all very similar - again, this renders the whole aspect of the original team pointless as well, since the original ARAH characters on both sides for the most part had unique uniforms/looks that fit each character.

    - Cobra Commander's new design was one of the worst villain designs I've ever seen in a movie, period. The initial breath mask and then later opaque head covering were terrible, and reminded me of a bad, low-budget 1970's/1980's B-grade sci-fi film. Also, I thought the character's origin was poor - having him initally a good guy, and then turn into a bad guy was a bad cliche - they should've stuck with the original ARAH origin.

    - The Destro-like soldiers that worked for the Baroness were very bland in appearance - where were the Cobra soldiers, Cobra Officers, Vipers, Eels, Snow Serpents, BATs, etc.?

    - Zartan was very boring. They didn't really show the Master of Disguise aspect of the character to any effect, except for the scene when he was being injected with that substance? that made him able to resemble anyone. I would've preferred to see the character from the ARAH comic/cartoon, where the reasons for the camouflage/disguises were more because of the skills/innate ability of the character.

    - I thought the re-doing of the origin of Snake-Eyes/Storm Shadow was poor, and wasn't even close to being as good as the much more powerful original origin of the characters (first seen in the superb G.I. Joe: ARAH Marvel comics #26 #27, which came out in 1984). Having Storm Shadow be just a bad guy rendered the ARAH character's motivations for joining Cobra meaningless - very, very poorly done.

    - Duke didn't even come close to resembling the iconic ARAH character in any way whatsoever.

    - Having the Baroness turn into a good guy at the end was ridiclous, especially since she was a very evil character in the ARAH comics (from the first issue-on!).

    - The action scenes were all a very high-tech, CGI-heavy mess, & the "Power suits" that Ripcord and Duke wore were not that interesting to me. The scenes with the nano-mites at the Eifell tower were very fake-looking.

    - Having Destro (at the end of the film) be controlled by Cobra Commander was a ridiculous plot point, and rendered the original Destro's strong-willed aspect (which led to the Cobra civil war in the comic) meaningless.

I could go on, but won't. One last thing I wanted to add, however: The question I asked myself after watching the film was this: Could they have instead made a grea

In other words, you agree with just about everyone over the age of 10.
I think everyone who hated RoC did so for pretty much the same reasons. the only other school of thought I've heard was "My boyfriend/child wanted to see this PoS and dragged me into it, and it sucked/was boring/stupid/etc."

Shockingly enough, the novelization of this movie was fantastic, as was the "prequal" novel. I read them both before I saw the movie. Funny how the books could rock but the movie could be so terrible. Bad acting, bad effects, did I mention bad acting?

Yes, G.I. Joe: ROC was a poor film all around. I hope that those who saw this and had never been exposed to the '80's G.I. Joe: ARAH comics/toys/etc. won't think of this film as being reprsentative of the '80's G.I. Joe mythology/universe.

Perhaps, but you'll probably notice that the majority of people not bitching about the end product, probably had little to no exposure the source material.

So, does that make them more or less qualified to comment?
Even the ignoring that gripes that were just about "not being like the 80s cartoon/comic books", the movie sucked. The story presented sucked. The technical effects sucked. The acting sucked. The directing... the camera work... the fx... the CGI... There is no aspect of the film that was done well. A movie with a cameral focussed on the hands of an 8to playing with action figures would have been better and more believable.

The movie was horrible. The only reason why I am even remotely contemplating purchasing it on DVD is because my Karate instructor was in it. Other than that, I wouldn't bother with the film after wasting the price of the ticket at the theater.

Well they had a screening of it for everyone but I was not able to attend. I was just curious. I'd buy it used on amazon. I'm not sure if he was credited or not, but one person said you can see him in a yellow Gi and that he did some fight sequence.

Only thing I'm gonna comment on.

I found the GI Joe team being predominantly Americans to be rather... dumb. Cobra's an international terrorist organization. Note-international. They don't wanna just take over Springfield or the US or even North America. the whole planet is Cobra's goal.

For it to be mostly Americans with the occasional person from another country is... dumb. Let's lay it out. It's a dumb idea. Everyone on the planet's a target by them.

Ah, it seems that again we are in disagreement.
Well, since the movies main market is The US, with international being secondary, the predominantly US team makes sense. 'GI Joe' was an nickname for AMERICAN soldiers and equipment, starting around 1907, but most popularly brought into service in the Great War/WWI.
Secondly, There's no reason why the US team couldn't have global/UN permission to operate internationally. There is kinda a precident for that: the US military. Sure, they let other countries help when convenient, but almost always in a supporting role, or as token political concession to make it look like the 'action' being taken is international.
The team is supposedly covert/unofficial like the mission impossible group--if you get captured or killed, gov't will completely disavow you--you're on your own.
Sure, there could be specialists from other member nations, because the main mandate is The World's best _____. If you want the completely international team, then the movie should be 'Action Force', as Hasbro marketted their toys outside the US.

I thought the film was entertaining. Maybe I was just expecting it to be terrible because of Transformers and Transformers 2, but I thought the film was pretty good at delivering a movie about a fight between a team of good guys and bad guys. Despite all the weird and obvious flaws. I actually used to watch "Real American Hero" quite a bit when I was younger, but tried to take all the changes on whether they potentially worked for the movie or not rather than if it was identical to the cartoon role it had. I didn't think it was exactly good, per say. But I had a lot more fun watching it than I ever expected.

I actually love it. Sure it's a little like the A-Team, especially with the new title sequence. But is is really good. And first episode MASSIVE SPOILER they blow up Ripcord.

Cobra Commander makes Resolute Cobra Commander seem like 80s cartoon Cobra Commander, Adler kills this role. Cobra is made more realistic. Mindbinder is modern and I like that. The Baroness is uterly cold and ruthless. Major Bludd can take on Snake-Eyes.

The Joes are good too. Duke, Scarlett, Tunnel Rat, Roadblock, and now Breaker are all pretty good. Of course my favorites were always Flint, Lady Jaye, and Shipwreck. Flint is good, can outsmart the Baroness. They made Lady Jaye latino but it isn't really a problem. Shipwreck hasn't shown up but I hope he will.

Next episode should have the Hard Master, Storm Shadow, Jinx, and Snake-Eyes backstory.

All in all I highly reccomend Renegades.

Yes, I agree with this - having the G.I. Joe team be Americans was a major part of the ARAH series. And, even though they were American, their adventures (at least in the Marvel comic) took them all over the world. Again, changing the team to be international is the only thing that the execrable ROC film did well, i.e. butcher the ARAH source material.
