Luke was brave in ANH. He accepted to help Obi-Wan to save Leia, and then he offered himself to help the pilots in Yavin. He was risking himself for nothing: he helped because he wanted to help. This was noble and altruistic.... He had no obligation to help...

In TESB, once again we see a Luke as a soldier, leading fighters to cover the rebels which were escaping. And even while he was training, his sense of responsability made him to go to aid his friends, whom he felt were in danger. It could be a bad strategy (his training was too important), but what we see is an attitude of protection, responsability and friendship.

In ROTJ Luke went even more altruist: he was decided to die trying to bring his father back to the light. He could have fled from the war, from his father, and from the tragedy.... But he surrendered to the villains, he was forced to fight the father he wanted to save, he didn't kill the father (for mercy, or love, or hope) and even while he was being tortured, he kept calling his father, because he was still trying to bring him back to the light.

Luke WAS a hero....... He took responsabilities even when it was none of his business, and even when his life was in real danger.

Now, what was that Luke in TFA???

Luke had trained Ben Solo!! Luke made the base of what Kylo Ren is. For the first time I see Luke having a moral obligation to stop the evil, because Luke trained him, and now Luke is the ONLY Jedi available to stop him. (BTW, Rey is some kind of miracle)

Where is Luke? Is he hoping for a miracle to emerge and do something, instead of him?

Each person whom Kylo kills (including Han) is Luke's fault, for he does nothing to prevent the darkness to spread.

Even when Yoda and Obi-Wan went exiled, Yoda at least tried to kill Palpatine (who then became unreachable, protected by the Empire), and Obi-Wan killed Anakin (at least Vader seemed dead), and he took care of Luke hoping to train the boy, one day.

Now what Luke is doing, depressed on that island? Where is his sense of urgency to stop the evil? His friends are in danger (his best friend is history now), a few hundreds of billions of people died with the Starkiller's attacks....

Why does Luke acts like a reckless now?

There's no way he's JUST hiding out in isolation. He's got something up his sleeve.

There are already several long-running threads where Luke's motivation for isolating himself is being discussed. We would be honored if you would join us.
