Besides Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, Gettysburg is my favorite. It's much more well known I think than Gods and Generals. I haven't seen the latter, but apparently Gettysburg is far superior.

For me, it's The Great Raid. But Saving Private Ryan would be #2.

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised that apocalypse now isn't in the list.

Not a true War movie, but I love Andersonville.

Glory is my favorite war movie, followed by The animated Starship Trooper series, and (not really a full on war movies either, but) The Last of the Mohicans, and The Thin Red Line are close behind it.

Interesting; even though I accept NYCitygurl's caveat of 'war as backdrop', I can't bring myself to see Schindler's List as a war film. It's a film about the Holocaust; and World War Two and the Holocaust were, and should always be seen as very seperate events. Nevertheless, I'm going to have to go with 'other' and choose 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1933 version).

Schindler's List gets my vote as well. It might not have portrayed the war of the front lines, but it was about a more deep, personal war - the struggle of one person to do what is morally right, even when faced with possible execution if his actions are found out... the brilliant performances by both Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes are an added bonus! :D

Hard to say - Saving Private Ryan was probably my favorite out of this list, however I'm also a big fan of films like Casablanca, The Longest Day, The Great Escape, etc.

Apocalypse Now ? The best affirmation that war is hell short of actually going to war yourself. From the Playboy bunny show gone awry, to the cross-cutting of the water buffalo sacrifice and Willard?s murder of Kurtz, first and foremost this film evokes a feeling of severe psychological unrest. Tack on some beautiful cinematography and a casting director who hit gold (Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall?), and you not only have the best film about war, but one of the best of all time.
