Thanks. I guess it just goes to show that you don't need to go out and buy a $250 replica to get a good saber. Well, I'm working on my second saber now, all that is left is to attach the emitter. It started out as a Big Yellow Box saber style 5 but all I ended up keeping from that design was the foregrip and the pommel. I'll post pics when its ready.

I'm planning to start work on my first lightsaber soon. I do have a couple of questions that I hope you guys can help with.

    1. Is there a way to smooth the edges of cut metal? I'm planning on buying a chrome sink pipe and cutting one end at a diagonal for the emitter, and I don't want to cut myself accidently when I'm done.

    2. Is there an easy way to attach leather to metal? I've been looking, but Google isn't much of a help.

    1. depends on if you sand it to get its remains off...
    2. yes just use superglue, but i'ld go with pleather on that its cheaper, and nobody would know anless you told them...

Yes, you can sand the edges of a sink tube, just be careful not to scratch up the chrome.

I don't think superglue will work with leather, it's not good for things that are porous. I don't know what you should use for that.

Personally I only work with real leather........

For a saber I made with overlapping strips of real leather, I soaked the strips in water, which made them more pliable. Then I glued them onto eachother and onto the saber with fabric glue while still wet. It was messy but I managed not to get any glue onto the outside of the leather. When they dried, they shrunk a little bit which made them grip onto the tube and into eachother better.
I did not know much about leather-working when I did this (and I still don't) but it worked out well. Maybe you could do wet-forming first, let it dry and then glue it on using something stronger.

Here is my latest LED lightsaber; it uses a white 3w LED, but is interchangeable with a couple other LEDs I have. This project was a testbed for an idea I have. I proved to myself that I MUST get a drill press before I attempt my more advanced project.

Alright, this is my second saber. It started out as a Big Yellow Box Style V saber, but, as i posted before, I only kept the foregrip and the pommel. The rest is of my own creation.

Here you can see some furiture tacks that i used as the calculator bubbles.

The emitter is a bathroom sink drain.

    [image=http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/4049/standing2bn.jpg]
    The entire saber.

    And a "functioning" photoshoped blade.

    1. I generally use metal files to smooth the edges.

    2. I used Welder glue to attach a leather grip to my lightsaber. It worked well for me since my leather is wrapped all the way around the hilt. I don't know how well Welder would do for individual leather pieces that aren't touching each other.

The bent piece is a portion of 1/2" wide 1/8" thick aluminum. I used a hacksaw to score the places where I wanted to bend it. The aluminum cracked a little along one of the bend lines so I dabbed some epoxy in to strengthen it. The gold-colored cylinders are stacks of brass washers which are placed over the shafts of the stainless steel capscrews which you can see on top of the aluminum thing. One of the capscrews holds the blade in, the other doesn't I also used some set screws to hold down the bottom of the aluminum piece.

Heh, those are pretty much the exact same components I used - I still need something for grips, though

Well, here is my latest. I still need to take it apart and do a proper cleaning of all the parts in prep for polishing. Oh, and I still need to drill a hole in the pommel for the EL power switch. And before that, I need to actually buy a suitable switch.

Dude! That is 100% leet. Love the blue EL accents on the sabre itself...although why did you go with a green blade when you added those blue EL accents? Prolly you should have gone with blue throughout. Regardless, it is cool. I wish I could make something that cool.

I would have used a blue LED, if I had one. I plan on getting a light blue sometime in the next few weeks.

I'm interested in making a lightsabre but don't know where to start. What's the best tutorial for making a lightsabre that glows? I've noticed that a lot of you use LEDs which seems to be the way to do it. What are the approximate costs of making it?

Best bet to find information is to go through the LED Blade Q and A's topic just below this one. Should have all the info you need. I was originally going to do an EL saber but this Luxeon one seems to be a whole lot simpler.

Yes, LED sabers are easier, I've built both, so I know. You do need some basic soldering skills, or have a friend who knows how do it for you.

I'm that friend for a lot of my local Fan Force members.

Wow it takes no time at all for stuff to fall of the front page here. Anywho. My first almost finished saber. Still need to drill and tap the top hole so my spring plunger will fit into it. This was originally going to be one half of a dual bladed saber, hence the larger emitter, but material here is running thin. And of course. It hasn't been cleaned up and polished.

This is the latest hilt I'm working on. I'm finishing up with the accent pieces. I took the instructions from Doright's tutorial and instead of using a pvc pipe for the main shaft, I used chrome drain pipe. The grip is made from a cut section from a shop vac replacement hose.
