Does anyone know if tauntauns are native to Hoth? Because if they are, I find it a little bit strange that an animal that is indigenous to a ridiculously cold planet would not evolve to withstand extreme temperatures, including temperatures below the freezing point.

According to Wook, they are indigenous to Hoth but still needed to either take shelter or hibernate at night due to the extremely low nighttime temperatures.

I think it's clear that they can survive below the freezing point, but it is quite plausible that there are certain regions or extremes - especially at dusk - where it just gets too cold, especially when the beast has been exerted.

You can literally run a horse to death, and I always got the impression that what Han did to his tauntaun was something similar.
