The Godfather would appear on my list on many days. The Commitments some. The Royal Tenenbaums occasionally. I'm a bit schitzo...

He's right to call it though; it's just intellectually lazy.

Despite outrageous claims of being based on a "true" story, I will concede The Passion is an excellent film.

Can't believe you said that. But yes, despite Gibson and the gore/torture porn...The Passion is an extremely powerful film. It moves me to tears, every single time I dare watch it.

What? It's utterly not true and totally fiction, but well made fiction nonetheless. And shooting in Latin, Aramaic etc was the right call.

I'd rather not create a religious debate here but I agree: it's a really well done fiction piece, but parts of it move me deeply. Call me a sentimental sap if you must and leave it at that.

I don't think Ender makes any great secret of that.

If I put "The James Bond films" on my list, no one would bat an eye at that?

I neglected so much in my list. Anyone else regret theirs? :)

If I could just sneak some Harryhausen in there, particularly Seventh Voyage of Sinbad....

OK, I'm making some updates / edits to my list, and it became a Top 15 list. Still resisting the temptation to list whole series as one entry, though.

    Return of the Jedi
    The Godfather
    The Godfather II
    Gladiator

    E.T.
    Up
    Toy Story 3

I see Shawshank in about every list. I guess I'm just missing something about it. It never clicked with me.

Skyfall? Really? It's pretty but so goddam stupid.

Penguinator - the whole lot? Even the bad ones?

FRAGWAGON, I regret not putting Master and Commander in there.

Darth_Invidious, there's no sense in apologising it. Gibson's sympathy for the subject matter translated into a hugely empathetic and brutal tale. It was exceptionally powerful film-making.

Master and Commander is definitely an exceptional film, filled with great performances all around. It is a shame it didn't get more love from critics and the idiots in charge of awarding great filmmaking (of course, it had the disadvantage of having ROTK as competition that year). Along with The Prestige and Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut, I need to include this one on my BluRay upgrade list.

FRAGWAGON: Shawshank could easily be dismissed as yet another prison escape movie, but at its hear it is a tale about friendship and, above all, maintaining hope against the most soul-crushing adversity. It doesn't hurt at all that it great directing, cinematography and performances throughout. And naturally, yet another great film that didn't get a love of love from award-giving idiots. It is easily the one Stephen King adaptation I've ever enjoyed. Maybe you should give it another chance.

Gibson is a rotten human being. Unfortunately he happens to be my favorite director. I wish he would direct more movies, for his sake and my sake. Its a far healthier way for him to express himself.

I wish he would too. He is an extremely gifted director. But unfortunately, going bat**** crazy and openly (or subtly) stating anti-semite statements was basically a bazooka blast to the foot. Especially in Hollywood. I'm not sure if he's exactly blacklisted at this point but I wouldn't be surprised if subtly or overtly he were.

I don't know, I really like it. It was a tough choice, though. I wanted something for Bond on the list, and choosing is hard. Craig has become my favorite Bond so far, though, and something about Skyfall made it edge out Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace for some reason.

Once you come to terms with how ridiculous some of the plot is, it is very re-watchable. I think it doesn't suffer from the pacing problems that I find Casino Royale has, despite Royale having a stronger narrative core and characters.

There are so many more movies now I think we need as a civilization to ditch top tens and go top 25 on every topic.

OK that's probably a fair point. I prefer Royale because of the Fleming connection, but I also like Quantum of Solace most of the Craig films.

    And I agree about Gibson.
