    Vignette #1: Reflections

?It is by chance that we met, by choice that we became friends.? ~Anonymous

I paced restlessly across the room for what seemed like the umpteenth time. I wasn?t so much anxious about the situation as I was eager to be reunited with my Master again. The Rebels are well prepared, and I?ve witnessed their courage in the face of danger. Fighting?s not an issue. That is to say, if the army is somehow able to track them down to this well-hidden underground base. And although the boy I had spoken to earlier was nothing but a twit, I have to admit that he is probably right about the army having very little chance of finding us here.

Then why am I longing for Obi-Wan?s presence? I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. Sure, he was given the more dangerous task of infiltrating the corrupt secret police force?but as his apprentice, I?ve witnessed his brilliancy countless times over the years. To Obi-Wan, this is nothing more than a daily chore. He has gone undercover as a mental patient, a slave owner, an emperor ? an escort, or whatever word Obi-Wan used to describe what I would define as a male prostitute. He is so annoyingly righteous at times.

One time, a whole race of people had mistaken him for a deity. Needless to say, Obi-Wan was properly horrified. And naturally, I could not resist the urge to tease him about it.

?Anakin? Could I borrow you for a moment??

I snapped out of my daze, and swiveled around to face the professor. She stared back at me with her sharp, hazel eyes. No matter how much her lips smiled, her eyes always possessed a serious, intelligent look. I imagine she has witnessed too much war in her lifetime. Before the Rebellion, she had been a popular political science professor at a prestigious university. Her teachings were so inspiring that her students felt compelled to revolt against the progressively oppressive government.

I bowed politely to her. ?Of course, Doctor Miyagi, how may I be of service??

?It?s one of the medical droids,? she explained. ?The maintenance department is understaffed right now, so I did what I could to fix it, but it?s still not functioning properly. General Ractrix says you?re an extremely gifted mechanic.?

?I?d be happy to help, Doctor.?

She led the way to the medical quarters. After a few minutes of silence, she said, ?Is your Master also talented at fixing things??

The question surprised me. ?There is very little that my Master cannot pull off,? I answered. ?He?s an extraordinarily talented Jedi.? I imagine how that must sound to her, like a child worshipping a hero. However, she only gave a polite nod.

?I have heard many great things about Master Kenobi.? The professor stopped briefly to acknowledge three ensigns who saluted as they passed. ?May I ask?how did he choose you as his apprentice??

?He didn?t choose me, Doctor. We were thrown together by fate.? I did not want to elaborate any further; it was not in the nature of the Jedi to speak openly to an outsider.

The professor gave me a knowing look. ?The Jedi are a private bunch,? she commented in a mild tone. ?I suppose they must separate themselves from the rest of the galaxy in order to carry out the astounding deeds they perform.?

?It is not for a Jedi to want,? I quoted Obi-Wan. ?We bring peace and justice to places that we can never completely be part of. We fight, we negotiate?and they triumph.?

?It must be lonely at times.? I thought she was speaking more to herself than to me.

?Yes,? I agreed quietly, finding myself dry of words.

She gazed at me with an expression of understanding. I liked this about her.
