New Order on 1930s instruments anyone?

 

Beck and the surviving members of Nirvana doing The Man Who Sold the World. Resonant for many reasons: Bowie's recent passing, Nirvana's iconic cover of this song from twenty (!) years ago, etc. It's a bit too reverent, I think. I love Beck's cover of Diamond Dogs from Moulin Rouge and the reason it works is because he puts his own stamp on it. But this close to Bowie's death, I suppose there wasn't any other way to do it. It's not a show-stopper, but it's worth a listen.

 

Is it crazy that I've never heard this one before?



Bob Dylan covering Johnny Cash, produced by Nile Rodgers and with Bernard Edwards on bass. Now making me realize that I would love to hear a real Dylan/Chic collaboration.

Miguel's Waves remix featuring Kacey Musgraves.

I'm not a fan of Miguel, but I love Musgraves. I think a collaboration between R&B crooner and Country it-girl qualifies as unexpected. I wish they'd pushed the country tinge a bit stronger, but I still like the way the steel guitar flourishes sneak in between the R&B beats. After that Primetime duet with Janelle Monae, I must say that Miguel finally has a second track in my collection. Just keep dueting with awesome women, Miguel.

Americana Nirvana

 

That's the one I came here to post the other day! Super good. Simpson is just a really, really compelling new voice in country music (new to me, anyway). I just love his style of singing and he really brings some great depth to this one.

 

I think it's the first Nirvana cover I've heard where it didn't make me think about Nirvana. I could enjoy this without reference to the original, even though the original is one of my favorite songs.

 

Kesha & Ben Folds do a beautiful, minimal cover of Dylan's It Ain't Me, Babe.
