I believe this weekend New York Comic Con is happening. Anyone thinking we might get a new trailer?

 

I doubt it.

I think Disney will use one of their other properties (i.e. ABC TV shows) to drop the new Star Wars trailer. With the movie nearly three months away from its release, I expect a new trailer before the end of the month.

 

Advance ticket sales begin Oct 19. I expect we'll see the trailer right before that.

 

We're getting the trailer December 19th.

 

So, legit question.

It's 10 weeks today until Star Wars for the good people of Belgium and the Netherlands among others.

So I have to decide today. I've figured out a vacation schedule so that I can fly to France and see TFA in Paris on the 16th. Unfortunately, my French c'est 'orrible, so I would then head to Stuttgart, Germany, to see it on the 17th, Gott sei Dank. Then I meet my family in Austria for a week's vacation with the in-laws and brother-in-law's family, fly to New York on Christmas Day and do a few days of post-Christmas celebration with my family on Long Island. Then back to Chicago by mid-week of the last week of December.

The math works. The timing works. I can take one child with me (dragging him not just to the movie but across the ocean and from country to country) and the wife has given it her begrudging blessing seeing as it ends up with Christmas in Austria.

So, do I do it? Worth the effort? I can't really tell.

 

No. You need to put minimal effort into seeing it. That is the only way it can possibly be worth it.

So how will you understand the dialogue in the French release?

 

really, really badly, that's why I'd need to go see it in German on the 17th.

I've spent more than a month of my life in Paris. It's the only place I've seen Dances With Wolves in a movie theater. If I can order a beer, I can understand the dialogue of a Star Wars movie.

 

But what if it's AOTC?

 

I'll feel really stupid and my own children and everyone I know will laugh at me along with all the people I don't actually know but with whom I interact online plus my work colleagues and casual acquaintances who will no doubt learn the story from someone. Swim team parents. Cross country parents. PTO members. It will be a source of general mirth.

It's also possible the boy will weigh the odds for himself and refuse to go with me.

 

Does the French cinema have English subtitles?

 

I think I saw Dances With Wolves in the original English. There are theaters in big European cities that run big name Hollywood movies "in der Originalfassung," e.g. Cinema UGC Cine Cite les Halles. I'm guessing however that those theaters don't get the English version until the 18th.

 

I hope the subtitles are as deep and meaningful as Backstroke of the West.

The only movies that are overdubbed in my country are kids' movies.

 

Sounds like France and Germany will be dubbing The Force Awakens.

I saw Avatar in Austria on opening night dubbed into German.

 

I'll prove it to you by quoting lines from TFA to you before it opens in your hometown.

 

I'm just saying I could fly to Amsterdam instead of Paris, and then directly to Vienna.
