Because prior to the widespread advent of a literate population, stories that were simultaneously interconnected and so idiosyncratic that they couldn’t really be held together in clean continuity were the norm. This is obviously isn’t why Disney is doing what it is but the idea isn’t inherently corrupting of art.

The more honest and true analysis would highlight the ways Disney’s profit-maximization has dramatically lowered the quality of storytelling regardless of the larger decisions about canon (eg their decision to cannibalize the plot of the entire first movie, such that TFA’s plot is as awkward and nonsensical as if they had tried to cram it in with the original stuff.). Or better yet, the extent to which Star Wars was more a marketing success than some masterpiece to begin with.

 

Disney is the greatest thing ever to happen to Star Wars, Jabba.

 

Ben sacrificed himself because Luke clearly wasn't going to leave with him still there on the Death Star.

Ben didn't do much on the mission himself, but he was the driving force behind the rescue mission - he convinced Luke to come, and he found and hired Han and Chewie. I don't think there would have been a rescue mission without him.

 

Lucasfilm never should have said that any story material outside of film & TV should be considered canon. They created this problem for themselves.
Whatever happens in games & books should just be a separate thing, as it is now with the Legends banner.

It's far more "sensical" than certain other episodes I could mention.

 

why are people debating with Wocky when he clearly doesn't remember key plot points. He's actually trolling and people fall for it.
